Tensions Flare on “The View”
An ordinary segment on ABC’s “The View” took a dramatic turn when co-host Whoopi Goldberg visibly tore up a note passed to her by fellow co-host Sunny Hostin during a live broadcast. The incident occurred during a discussion about Donald Trump’s recent “60 Minutes” interview.
The Joke That Started It All
The panel was discussing Trump’s pardon of Changpeng “CZ” Zhao, the founder of the crypto exchange Binance. Hostin mentioned that Trump claimed in his interview that he knew nothing about Zhao or the pardon.
“The Trump family has made about $1.8 billion, profited off of this government and he said that Joe Biden didn’t know who he was pardoning using an autopen,” Hostin said, before questioning Trump’s own lack of knowledge.
Goldberg interjected with a deadpan comment: “Because he used an autopen.”
Goldberg’s Fiery Reaction to Clarification
Later in the show, as Goldberg was speaking, Hostin passed her a handwritten note on a card. Goldberg’s reaction was immediate and dismissive.
“What the hell? What?” she exclaimed, reading the note before tearing it into pieces. “We don’t know if Trump used an autopen to pardon, it was a joke!”
Hostin attempted to state the clarification for the record, but Goldberg continued, expressing her frustration with the current media climate.
“I’m sorry. The hardest thing about this job now is no one understands nuance,” Goldberg stated emphatically. “You know when you hear a joke, when somebody is fooling around, when they’re not saying something specific. Especially on this show. I’m very specific when I’m pointing stuff out. When I’m making jokes, you know when I’m making jokes. This is ridiculous.”
The studio audience responded with applause, supporting Goldberg’s stance.
Following the on-air spat, Goldberg shifted the conversation to a critique of Trump’s immigration policies, detailing her frustration with the treatment of individuals who follow legal processes only to face deportation checks at court appearances.
