Vision’s Haunting Return to the MCU
During a surprise announcement at the New York Comic Con Marvel Television panel, Head of Marvel Television Brad Winderbaum, alongside MCU star Paul Bettany, officially unveiled VisionQuest. The new series will serve as the climactic final chapter in the thematic trilogy that started with the genre-bending WandaVision and continued with last year’s Agatha All Along. The show is slated for a 2026 release on Disney+.
A Hero’s Heartbreaking Search for Self
Paul Bettany took the stage to elaborate on his character’s difficult emotional state following the events of WandaVision. After the spectral “White Vision” had his memories restored by the Hex-created Vision, he has been left in a state of disconnect.
“What’s different about Vision right now is that Red Vision gave Vision all of his memories, including the memories from within the Hex. But White Vision is having real difficulty connecting to them,” Bettany explained. “So he has the memories, but he doesn’t have the emotions and the feelings, and I think that’s what the journey is. White Vision’s journey during the show is about his attempt to connect to those memories and who he was… but with lasers!”
This internal conflict will form the core of the series, as the android embarks on a quest to reclaim the humanity he once had.
A Villain’s Return and an AI Reunion
The biggest shock from the panel was the reveal of the show’s cast. Exclusive footage confirmed that James Spader will reprise his role as the menacing AI, Ultron, last seen in Avengers: Age of Ultron.
He is joined by a host of familiar voices and faces representing other iconic AI from the MCU’s history. The cast includes James D’Arcy as J.A.R.V.I.S., Orla Brady as F.R.I.D.A.Y., and Emily Hampshire as E.D.I.T.H., alongside Henry Lewis as D.U.M.-E and Jonathan Sayer as U. The footage also gave fans a glimpse of Ruaridh Mollica, identified on a CCTV screen as Thomas Shepherd, one of Wanda and Vision’s powerful twin sons.
What to Expect from ‘VisionQuest’
When asked if the new series would adopt the sitcom-parody format of its predecessor, Winderbaum remained tight-lipped. “The less we say, the better,” he teased. However, he assured fans that the show, under the guidance of showrunner Terry Matalas (Star Trek: Picard), will deeply resonate with long-time followers of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “What I will say about Terry’s vision for the show is that he knows the lore. So if you’ve been following the MCU all these years, you’re going to be very, very, very rewarded.”
