Recent Pixel 5 update improves GPU gaming performance

GOOGLE Pixel 5 phone GPU performance after update

Yesterday, we shared with you the April 2021 Android Pixel Security Update that Google just released. It is mainly for most Pixel phones that start with the Pixel 3. One of the main beneficiaries of the update was the Pixel 5, which is said to have seen a great improvement when it comes to GPU performance. The software update has provided a number of changes to the camera, connectivity and stability, in addition to more performance optimizations for the Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5.

The optimizations They’ve made the Pixel 5, specifically, see a jump in GPU performance. This means that games get better, which is good news for phone owners. Note that an early update to Android 11 caused Pixel phones to slow down a bit when it comes to graphical testing.

Even with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G processor, the Android 11 update made some units run slowly. The April 2021 update has been rolled out and promises “Performance Optimizations for Certain Graphics-Intensive Games and Applications” for both Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5.

Better Pixel 5 GPU performance

Andreas Proschofsky from Der Standard ran a GPU performance test. He noted that there was indeed an improvement in the performance of the games. 30-50% better than before. Other sources also shared the same observation. The Pixel 5 scored 3286/3083 in the OpenGL / Vulkan tests, compared to 2278/2260 in the 3DMark Sling Shot Extreme.

Google hasn’t shared an explanation for the previous reduction in performance. There could be an issue with the Android 11 update, but it should be fixed by now.

On a related note, the recent update is saying have delivered Netflix HD playback to some Google Pixel phones. Netflix has officially certified HD Pixel devices (Widevine L1) but the latest update is causing some problems. However, it is not very widespread, but we believe that a solution will be released soon.
