Nothing Phone (1) is strong, really strong as the durability test reveals its unyielding body

The Nothing Phone (1) could attract many customers looking for a flamboyant new smartphone, but a relevant question remains: is it durable? At first glance the phone may seem sturdy, thanks to its metal frame and 8.3mm thick body, but we’ve seen plenty of devices with a similar build fail in the past. In this case, Zach Nelson, who also goes by JerryRigEverything on YouTube, put the phone through a series of durability tests. It turns out that the smartphone is not as fragile as some might think. Interestingly, the LED lights on the back do not flicker under pressure.

The video is available on YouTube, and Nelson begins with his screen scratch test. Before the first stage begins, the YouTuber points out that the Nothing Phone (1) comes with a protective film on top of the glass display. Typically a plastic panel would start scratching at levels 2-3 with a metal tipped pen. The glass starts to show scratches at levels 6-7 and the sapphire panels at levels 8-9.

In case you were wondering, the front and back panels of the Nothing Phone (1) have Corning’s Gorilla Glass 5 protection.

The YouTuber then begins to scratch the body of the smartphone using a metal razor blade, resulting in scratches all over the aluminum frame and front panel of the phone.

After the scratch test, Nelson also tries the screen burn test where he literally puts the screen under fire with his lighter to see if the pixels recover under extreme heat. We notice that the pixels recover after a while, the process is very slow. Finally, during its bend test, the Nothing Phone (1) survived without any cracks. In fact, the rear LED lights look intact even under heavy pressure.

Readers should note that the YouTuber did not try any drop tests with the smartphone and freak crashes do happen, so the durability of a phone can never be definitive. But the current test is what we least expect from this smartphone.

Currently, the pricing of the Nothing Phone (1) in India starts at Rs 32,999 for the base variant of 8GB RAM and 128GB storage.
