Amazon says that when they launched Samuel L. Jackson’s special guest celebrity on Alexa, it became their best-selling digital purchase on the day of its launch. So they decided to bring in other celebrity guests that users can “interact” with on their Alexa-powered devices. Now you can pay for Shaquille O’Neal to give you some of his rap styles or for Melissa McCarthy to tell you a funny story as part of the Alexa experience on your smart speakers or mobile devices.
If you tell your Alexa device “Hey Melissa” or “Hey Shaq”, you can hear their respective personalities on things like weather information, a joke, or a personal story. You can also say “Hey Shaq, rap for me” and he will share with you some of his vocal styles from his second career (or third if you include acting). If you’re more in the mood for funny stuff, say “Hey Melissa, tell me a story” and you might get a joke from Dad.
To get started, you will need to purchase one of the personalities (or both) to add to your account. Then you will have to say “Alexa, introduce me to Shaq” or “Alexa, introduce me to Melissa” so that you can start listening to them or ask them to do things or some questions that have pre-recorded answers. Amazon hopes to achieve the same level of success that it had with Samuel L. Jackson, although, of course, the personalities of these two celebrities may be different.
Aside from these two additions to the Alexa experience, users can now choose between the original Alexa voice and a new male voice option. Just say “Alexa, change your voice” to switch to the new voice option. Now you can also add another option to your trigger word, Ziggy. The other available trigger words are Alexa, Computer, Echo, or Amazon. So to change, just say “Alexa, change your activation word” and then choose from the available options.
The Shaq and Melissa Alexa personalities they are now available for $ 4.99 each. It appears to be available only in the US.
