The territory had asked the highest European football organization to be a full member last December
The UEFA Executive Committee, meeting this Sunday in London, has rejected the request made by the Basque Football Federation to become a full member of the body. The Executive Committee, of which the president of the Spanish Federation is a member, Luis Rubiales, has rejected the request “unanimously”, with which, in no case, is there the possibility that a hypothetical Basque team will play international competitions.
The decision is supported by a very simple reason: the Basque Federation does not meet UEFA’s admission criteria “as it is not an independent state”, and the UEFA Executive Committee has made it clear that the Basque Federation “belongs to the Spanish Federation of Football “.
The request was submitted on December 20 to UEFA and FIFA by the president of the Basque federation, Javier Landeta, accompanied by members of the Basque Government. It was the last attempt by the authorities of the Basque Country so that their team, which plays friendly matches at Christmas time, could be one more team on the European scene.
With this decision, UEFA closes the doors to Basque aspirations, which, without the endorsement of the international legal system, had tried to be recognized by the highest international football organizations. In this sense, the firm stance of the Spanish Football Federation has been key for the body that presides Alexander Ceferin made this decision.
