- Gael Monfils returns to Auckland’s Centre Court treating the ASB Classic as a likely final chapter in his career.
- The 39-year-old opens his 2026 season against Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan after a long layoff since September.
- Monfils says being able to play is already a win; he plans a reduced schedule focused on the French Open.
Monfils frames Auckland as a last dance
Gael Monfils walked onto Centre Court in Auckland with gratitude and perspective, telling media he does not feel like he is defending a title but instead treating the ASB Classic as the start of his final tour year. The 39-year-old, who won the event last year, opens his 2026 campaign against Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan.
“Just being here is a win,” Monfils says
Monfils said the opportunity to compete again is meaningful after a sparse late-2025 season. “I’m not coming back as a defending champion in my head, because I’m coming back more like it’s my last tournament in Auckland, ever,” he said. “I think to be on the court, it’s already a big win. And if I can win matches, it’s even better.”
Fitness, select schedule and priorities
The Frenchman has not played competitively since September and last recorded a win at Wimbledon. At 39, recovery and match readiness are central concerns. He admitted he felt the physical cost after last year’s successful run from Auckland to the Australian Open and is tailoring the 2026 calendar with that in mind.
Targeting big events
Monfils outlined a modest schedule that prioritises the French Open. He hopes to play a few events in South America after Australia, then target Indian Wells, Miami, the US Open and the Paris Grand Slam. “Paris will be the most important thing,” he said. He estimated he may compete in around a dozen tournaments if his body allows.
Life after tennis
When he hangs up his racquet, Monfils expects a quieter life off tour. With wife Elina Svitolina still competing, he plans to work in finance and spend time at home with their daughter rather than continue travelling the circuit.
Order of play — Centre Court highlights
Centre Court action begins at 11:30. Monfils is scheduled for the evening session:
- Fabian Marozsan (HUN) vs Gael Monfils (FRA) — Not before 18:00
- Other Centre Court matches include Alejandro Tabilo vs Camilo Ugo Carabelli and Roberto Bautista Agut vs Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.
What to watch
Fans should watch how Monfils manages movement and intensity early in the match. Even without full match sharpness, his experience and showmanship often shift momentum. For Monfils, this week is less about defending a crown and more about savouring the chance to compete on Centre Court once more.
