A Love Letter to New York Takes Over a Landmark
For two weeks this fall, Grand Central Terminal is set to undergo a transformation unlike any in its 112-year history. From October 6–19, the iconic transit hub will become a massive canvas for ‘Dear New York,’ a public art installation from Humans of New York creator Brandon Stanton. In an unprecedented move, all advertising will be cleared from the terminal, making way for what organizers call a “visual love letter” to the city.
What You’ll See at the Breathtaking Installation
The centerpiece of ‘Dear New York’ will be in the Main Concourse, where massive 50-foot projections designed with the help of Broadway’s David Korins (Hamilton) will illuminate the iconic space. Throughout the terminal, over 150 digital screens will display thousands of portraits and stories from Stanton’s 15-year archive.
More Than Just Projections
The art extends beyond the main hall. Both levels of the subway tunnels will be wrapped in imagery by the renowned design firm Pentagram, marking the most extensive artistic use of the subterranean space. Additionally, Vanderbilt Hall will host free live programming and showcase new works from emerging New York City artists and public school students.
A Gift to the City
What makes this event truly unique is its funding model. The entire installation is financed by proceeds from Stanton’s forthcoming book, representing a creator’s direct reinvestment into the city. This spectacular exhibition is free and accessible 24/7, turning the city’s busiest building into its biggest and most inclusive art gallery.
