Ted Lasso star Brett Goldstein was just as shocked by the casting of Hercules as you were

Marvel Studios often keeps its projects under lock and key in hopes of preventing any potential spoilers regarding its movies and television shows. As the Marvel machine constantly turns, this means that sometimes actors are cast into roles immediately before filming. In the case of Hercules’ debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, actor Brett Goldstein got two weeks to prepare for the role.

As the actor recalled recently, his management team contacted him one night to ask if he would hop on a Zoom chat with Marvel later. Before the night was over, Goldstein was offered the role of the Greek god.

“No, I didn’t know what it was for. I was told that some Marvel guys want to zoom in with you, and I met them and it was very real because … it was literally out of the blue at night. And I was so busy and it was like, ‘Can you make time for Zoom?’ ‘Yeah, sure,'” the Ted Lasso star said in a recent conversation playlist,

He said, “And they go to Zoom and they tell me exactly what you see in the movie, which is how they open up like, ‘So Russell Crowe is Zeus,’ and I’m like, ‘Yeah, right, Go .’ And blah, blah, blah. And then they turn and they reveal ‘It’s Hercules; it’s you.’ And I went, ‘What?’ Like, ‘Are you serious? Are you king with me? Is it a breeze?’ So yeah, it was as surprising to me as I think it is to other people.”

According to the actor, he then chatted with Taika Waititi and took two weeks to prepare for the role before shooting his solo post-credits scene.

“Yeah, when I talked to Taika, I said, ‘You know I’m basically like a skinny comedian?’ I said, ‘When is this filming happening?’ It was like two weeks, and I was like, “‘I mean, I’ll do my best, but two weeks seems…’ I said, ‘He doesn’t have to be as big as Thor, right?’ And look, I mean, I’m doing 400 pushups on that day. I was fit to explode. I did my best that day.”

Taika Waititi, who directed Thor: Ragnarokreturns to direct Thor: Love and Thunder, He also co-wrote the film’s screenplay with Jennifer Katyn Robinson. The film stars Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Chris Pratt, Jamie Alexander, Pom Clementieff, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Sean Gunn and Vin Diesel.
