She-Hulk: Attorney at Law Marvel hosted a global virtual press conference on Thursday afternoon to gather the show’s stars and its creatives to discuss the latest entry into the Cinematic Universe. Present to discuss She-Hulk are Jane Walters herself, Tatiana Maslany, Nikki actor Ginger Gonzaga, director and executive producer Kat Coiro, and lead writer and executive producer Jessica Gao.
“I remember being a little girl and looking at the cover of a She-Hulk comic in the middle of a sea of male comics and not knowing who she was or what it was, just knowing that I was impressed by It was,” Coiro said. “Taking control, taking up space was something that really resonated with me and I remember I bought that comic book, so when this show came on it was really a dream.”
“Nikki Ramos, I would hang out with Nikki in real life,” Gonzaga said. “I like Nikki. She’s very independent. She’s the kind of person who can do whatever you want.”
“Each episode really has a different flavor and we pulled from multiple genres,” Coiro said. “It also has a huge cinematic scope and elements of action, drama, suspense… it’s really just a small spire behind the scenes of the everyday, sometimes mundane life of a superhero…”
Gao says Marvel got rejected three times before she hulk, “It was the perfect project,” she said. “I’m glad they rejected me three times.”
Working closely with Jen and Bruce, according to Maslany, “was a very easy dynamic to bring on camera”. “A lot of the characters on this show have that ring of truth,” which he thinks was easy to bring up.
“Basically, I thought first and foremost was the fourth wall breaking and meta humor and self awareness. It was John Byrne’s race that made him fall in love with the She-Hulk comics. Comedy was a priority. It was,” says Coiro It was important to keep those elements and make sure the story fit into the MCU.
Maslany remembered going out into Hall H and feeling dizzy from the energy in the Hall H room. “It was good not to keep Daredevil a secret anymore,” Coiro said.
Gao describes trying to figure out how to decide what’s shown in trailers she hulk, “It was settled [Kevin Feige and I] Taking a dig at each other on our respective posts on the pieces in the trailer.”
How does the She-Hulk break the fourth wall in a unique way? “She was doing it long before Deadpool or Fleabag,” Coiro said.
Gao said, “If you know anything about She-Hulk’s character, you’ll know him.” “It went through a lot of evolutionary steps. A long journey pf how much does she talk to the camera? Is there any other meta element? Is she talking to someone else who is behind the scenes?” There was a version where there were editor notes and Jane was actually interacting with the editor’s notes on screen.
It came down to finding the balance of breaking the fourth wall enough to captivate an audience but not fully connect with the world, Coiro says.
“She knows about the audience,” Maslany said. “It’s like her super power is intertwined with meta … there’s something about that super, hyper-awareness of who she is.”
“He was never prescriptive,” Maslany said of Ruffalo. “He was lying on the ground outside as Bruce and he wakes up as the Hulk, actually from a lying down position and he suddenly stands up … to play the character and physically embody him. And being inside of that, you get to do cool stuff like that… To me, I was like, ‘Oh, cool, I want to be able to do that sometimes.'”[layingthischaracterandphysicallyembodyinghimandbeingsoinsideofhimyougettodocoolstufflikethatTomeIwaslike’OhcoolIwanttobeabletodothatsometime'”[layingthischaracterandphysicallyembodyinghimandbeingsoinsideofhimyougettodocoolstufflikethatTomeIwaslike’OhcoolIwanttobeabletodothatsometime'”
“Action and CGI take a lot of rigorous preparation and a comedy is the opposite,” Coiro said of balancing the tone. They will rehearse beforehand and try to maintain a semblance of slackness, while balancing the technical aspects with that looseness to comedy.
Coiro says that there was no other option for She-Hulk other than Maslany. “It required performance nuances that only Tatiana could really deliver,” Corio said.
“We talked a lot about how important it is for this character to be human first,” Gao said. “A second ago it was just words on a page and now I’m looking at this person who I think has lived this whole life… Plus, he’s so funny!”
“Hulk’s initial struggle is that he’s out of control… he’s conscious in this otherworldly form and it’s uncomfortable,” Gonzaga said of She-Hulk.
Gao explains that she wanted to include a scene in the women’s bathroom and that Jennifer was protected by strangers to show that she is part of our real world and that it is always a safe place, no matter the location of the bathroom. Where women will support each other.
What did Maslany find most relatable about Jennifer Walters? “Her resistance and she’s created this life for herself that she doesn’t want to let go,” Maslany said. “When this happens to her, she has to deal with a whole other notion of being placed on herself and socially expected of who she should be… her outlandish perception, that was super interesting to me. Honestly, when I read the pilot, though, ‘I have to. I very badly want to audition for this because it’s so funny. It’s mundane. It’s short.’ I have always dreamed of being a part of a superhero show where you get to see the moments in between.”
Koiro wants to make it fun, entertaining, and escapist while opening up new perspectives for people to see things through a new lens and believes the show is fun but has “really deep undertones.” Gonzaga reinforces those ideas by comparing her to her Nikki character and how irresistible she is. Maslany is waiting for people to talk about the show. “I’m curious about the question of why,” said Maslany, a visceral reaction to women as superheroes. “There’s a lot going on that challenges people and I think we really hit in an amazing way.” Gao wants Marvel fans to find “a new area to enjoy Marvel” and wants those who “didn’t get to see themselves reflected, now get to see them.” She can’t even wait to see all the memes coming out of the show.
