James Gunn Reveals Deleted ‘Groots Last Supper’ Scene From First Guardians Of The Galaxy

James Gunn, not one to shy away from fan service in the slightest, took to social media last week to remind fans that there was a one-shot cut from the first Guardians of the Galaxy that would be inspired by “The Last Supper” and featured The grout in the center of the table will be displayed. In the original painting by Leonardo da Vinci, Jesus was seated in that seat, and the painting was intended to depict his final meal with his apostles before being crucified at the hands of the Roman government. In addition to Groot sitting in the Jesus spot, this shot would have seen Drax in the seat usually occupied by Judas Iscariot, the apostle who betrayed Jesus.

Given that the scene took place on Nowhere, you can assume Drax’s betrayal—if his situation meant anything profound—was calling Ronan into Nowhere, which turns out to be a pretty horrific mistake. Even so, this did not directly contribute to Groot’s death. Still, it’s safe to assume that Groot was meant to be in “Jesus’ seat” to signal to the attentive audience that the character wouldn’t make it out of the fight entirely.

Gunn has shared the image before – in 2017. Around the time of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Gun revealed that the shot was cut from the film, and was not a cut scene, but a trimmed shot from a scene that appeared in the final cut.

“It was a shot Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 It was cut from the film and never finished,” Gunn explained at the time. “The great actors at Framestore finished a frame and just gave it to me as a gift. Thanks, guys!” He added, “It was from the end of the scene where Drax is getting drunk and riding on the f’saki chasing Orloni.”
