A Secret Unveiled at Lincoln Center

In a move that caught the film world by surprise, A24’s highly anticipated ‘Marty Supreme’ held its world premiere Monday night at the New York Film Festival. Attendees for the festival’s “secret screening” were the first in the world to see the Timothée Chalamet-led film from director Josh Safdie.

A Race to the Finish

Director Josh Safdie took the stage at Alice Tully Hall to introduce the film, admitting the premiere was a tight squeeze. “I hate surprises too,” Safdie told the audience, revealing a startling fact: “I finished it at 2 a.m. yesterday. … You’re the first audience to see this film.”

Chalamet, a New York native, joined his director and shared his personal connection to the venue, noting that he attended high school just down the street. The star said it was “fucking awesome” to have his film premiere at NYFF.

A24’s High-Stakes Game

‘Marty Supreme’ represents a significant gamble for indie powerhouse A24, carrying a price tag of $70 million—the studio’s largest budget ever. The film sees Chalamet as an aspiring ping-pong pro. Co-star Gwyneth Paltrow plays the wife of a rival who has an affair with Chalamet’s character, previously teasing, “There’s a lot — a lot.”

The film, co-written by Safdie and his frequent collaborator Ronald Bronstein, also features a diverse cast including Odessa A’Zion, Fran Drescher, and Tyler Okonma. It marks Josh Safdie’s first solo directing effort after co-directing acclaimed hits like ‘Uncut Gems’ with his brother, Benny.
