Angela Vaughn has a secret and she’s about to shake up Oak Bluffs.
Fox released the first look at his upcoming series, Our kind of people, and Angela from Yaya DaCosta takes center stage. Inspired by the acclaimed book by Lawrence Otis Graham, Our Kind of People: Inside America’s Black Upper Class, the series follows the wealthy and powerful black elite of Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard, who have ruled their community with an iron fist for more than 50 years. Angela, a strong-willed single mother, promises to send a stir to that very community as she sets out to reclaim her family name and make an impact with her revolutionary hair care line that highlights the innate and natural beauty of black women.
But Angela doesn’t have all the keys. He soon discovers a dark secret about his mother’s past that will turn his world upside down and leave the community in an uproar.
Described as a “soapy and exciting exploration of race and class in America,” Our kind of people promises an “unapologetic celebration of black resistance and achievements.” Karin Gist serves as a writer and executive producer alongside Empire’s Lee Daniels, Ben Silverman, Rodney Ferrell, Marc Velez, Claire Brown, Pam Williams, and Montrel McKay. Tasha Smith, directed by 9-1-1, Big sky Y P-Valley, directed the series premiere.
The show also features a star-studded cast that includes Morris Chestnut, Joe Morton, Nadine Ellis, Lance Gross, Rhyon Nicole Brown, Kyle Bary, and newcomer Alana Bright. DaCosta was announced as the headliner of the series the same day ET found out she was leaving. Chicago Med at the end of the current sixth season. She, along with her former co-star Torrey DeVitto, had been in the NBC medical drama since it debuted in 2015.
Our kind of people premieres Tuesday, September 21 on Fox.
