Whoa, Nellie! A new face trudged into Hope Valley.

Kind regards, meet Amanda Wong, the actress plays Mei Sou on the upcoming season 9 from When the heart calls The British native who previously appeared on shows like ABC’s drama A million little things, boasts a seriously accomplished résumé. She speaks multiple languages, has a Masters in Journalism from the University of Hong Kong, and even holds a Guinness World Record for greatest finger painting (an honor she was given while cruising with her family and about 2,000 others).

ET chatted with Wong exclusively via email in front of her WCTH Debut where it seems her character is just as impressive as she. “She has the courage to convince,” enthuses the actress, which is certainly reflected in our first look at Mei Sou when she ties Mountie Nathan Grant on her arrival in town (more on this below)!

Wong, who is of Chinese descent, also proudly tells us why she’s excited to see her legacy on the long-running series. “I am delighted that a strong, intelligent Asian woman is arriving in Hope Valley,” she said. Read more below!

ET: Congratulations on joining the When the heart calls Family! How did this opportunity come about?

Amanda Wong: Thank you for the warm welcome! I must credit our showrunner John Tinker and the actor, writer and director Peter DeLuise with this opportunity. You played a huge role in creating Mei Sou and worked so hard to bring it to life!

Growing up I had never seen myself featured in English language films or shows, so I was there WCTH is both surreal and life changing. John and Peter really made me feel like I was part of the conversation with Mei, and some of my real life skills went into their story. I’m happy that a strong, intelligent Asian girl is arriving at Hope Valley, but I’m especially happy to be allowed to be the one to play her.

Now that you are a performer, can you describe the experience of joining the show?

I remember my first day … I was so nervous; my stomach was full of knots! It’s always embarrassing to be the new kid. I wanted to make my agent proud, I wanted to do a good job and represent Asian Americans, and I wanted to make friends. I remember seeing a post on Twitter or Instagram that said, “Being new to a job is so embarrassing for no reason.” Someone said, “It feels like you’re a new character on season 5 of a show.” Imagine you were a new character in season 9!

But luckily for me, I can work with a lot of really great people. I was welcomed with open arms and immediately felt part of the group. Hope Valley is just as wonderful as everyone imagines it to be. It’s absolutely idyllic, everyone is nice, and the snacks are great!

Tell us about your character Mei Sou: who is she? How is she? How does it end up in Hope Valley?

How is Mei now? Let’s just say Mei might or might not have ridden into town on a very fast brown quarter horse. Ha! Seriously, Mei (which means “beautiful”) is really a spectacular woman. She has the courage to convince, is strong and intelligent, loves animals and is super passionate. It is not without its flaws, but it has many admirable qualities.

What are you most looking forward to with Mei Sou for the fans this season? Is there one scene you can tease that shouldn’t be missed?

Mei is really a great character and I’m happy that our fans are falling in love with her, just like me. As for one scene not to be missed … the season is packed with them! I can’t pick a favorite, but I can say that Mei really does make an appearance. Fans just have to watch and tell me which scene is their number one!

In the sneak peek clip we saw, Nathan seems quite fond of Mei Sou. What can you tease about her storyline this season? Can we expect some romance?

Ha! You know, the sneak peek was filmed moments after Kevin McGarry and I first met. Kevin is such a talented and charismatic guy, the chemistry is so easy to transfer to the screen. Now I don’t want to spoil the fun or give anything away, but that doesn’t stop there.

Does Mei Sou get close to women in Hope Valley? If so, who does she have most in common?

Mei comes very close to the women in Hope Valley. She gets to know Florence, Molly, and Faith quite well. Can’t say much I know Hearties don’t miss anything!

Describe season 9 of WCTH in 3 adjectives!

Exciting, effective, heartwarming!
