Venice Film Festival 2022: Everything you need to know about the film event

The 79th edition of the Venice Film Festival begins this Wednesday with a range of stars and authors, some of them from Mexico and Argentina, without forgetting the big names in Hollywood, who have made the event a a good springboard before the Oscars.

For 10 days, until September 10, veteran authors such as Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and the american Darren Aronofsky, next to almost unknown young people who make their debut in the different sections.

The festival will open with the film White Noise by renowned director and screenwriter Noah Baumbach, based on the novel by the famous American writer Don DeLillo.

The film, produced by Netflix – present with four films and a series -, starring Greta Gerwig and Adam Driver aspires to the highest award, which will be awarded by a jury headed by actress Julianne Moore.

Total 23 films have been selected to compete for the prestigious Golden Lionincluding five Italians and five French, directed by renowned filmmakers.

Mexico, in competition

Acclaimed and award-winning filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu, author of Birdman, Dog loves Y 21 gramscompetes with one of his most personal films, Bardo (or false chronicle of a few truths)shot entirely in Mexico.

For his part, the Argentine Santiago Miter competes with Argentina, 1985, about the historic ruling against the first three military junta of the dictatorship (1976-1983) with actors Ricardo Darín and Peter Lanzani in the role of prosecutors Julio Strassera and Luis Moreno Ocampo.

The director of the festival, Alberto Barbera, who has condemned the detention of important filmmakers in Iran, also invited for the official section Jafar Panahi, who is serving a six-year prison sentence for Iranian “propaganda against the regime”, for which he will not be able to be present. The movie Blonde by Andew Dominik, which recounts the extravagant life of Marilyn Monroewith the Cuban-Spanish Ana de Armas in the main role, will be one of the great attractions.

Laura Citarella from Argentina and Fernando Guzzoni from Chile will compete in the Horizontes section, among the most innovative in the contest, while Carlos Eichelmann Kaiser from Mexico will compete in Horizontes Extra.

Various exhibitions, parties and tributes have been organised, including the delivery of the Golden Lions to the race for Paul Schrader and Catherine Deneuvewhile the parallel sections like Venezia Classici return.

As a tribute to the admired Korean Kim Ki-Duk, who died of coronavirus, Venice will screen Call of Godhis posthumous film.
