Valentín Alsina, Venezuela, Miami, the children and the eternal romance with Marlene

This Thursday -September 8- Ricardo Montaner turns 65. A man of multiple nationalities -in addition to being Argentine, he is Venezuelan, Colombian and Dominican-, and despite the fact that he settled in Miami two decades ago, Montaner is still that boy from Valentín Alsina who dreamed of succeeding in music.

He did it, he did it. And on TV too, if we take, not to go too far, his leading role in The Argentine Voice. A life “for which I am grateful every day,” he says. A life with indelible moments…

Childhood in Valentín Alsina

“When I was little and lived at 2230 Portela Street, Valentin Alsina, there was a bakery on the corner. I always had the fantasy that my parents had a bakery… We were having a hard time. We lived in a tenement house where they lived five families; one of the families was mine. My sister, my dad, my mom and I lived in a room with wooden walls. It was a room with a shared bathroom with the rest of the families,” he recalled.

the first guitar

In the bed of that room was where He received his first guitar when he was six years old. It was a gift from the Three Wise Men. With emotion, he recounted the details of that moment: “I had always dreamed of a guitar. I thought that there was no need to learn, but that I could play it from the first day. So I started strumming anything, while singing a song by Palito Ortega, who was one of my great idols”.

get down

Although he acknowledged that his family had financial limitations, he assured that this was never a problem.ma: “I don’t like giving that pity syndrome, because it didn’t go bad for me at all. I had a deprived childhood, but I did not dream of going to Disney, because for me it was a television show that I watched on my black and white television.

“Not even with having a car of my own, because I didn’t have any friends who had one. We were a family that lived with a lot of economic scarcity, but with a lot of love”.

Thanks to a loan that his father took out, he moved to a bigger house. In that same house, they opened a kiosk. “There he played at being a salesman. He had a small window where he sold alfajores and pencils to the kids who went to school,” he said.

Despite settling in Miami, his return to the country was constant. Here, at a show at Luna Park, in 2008.

Venezuela and after…

When he was almost eight years old, his father received an irrefutable job offer in Venezuela: “It was a resounding change, it gave him the opportunity to give us a better education, to give the family a better life.”

“But I don’t remember it as a very happy stage. I was bullied at school. They were very difficult years”, he evokes.

The first song, the first girlfriend

“I must have composed it back in ’73, it was called spring nights and it was dedicated to my first girlfriend, Ana Vaz Pönicke”. In 1975 they would marry and have two children, Alejandro Manuel and Héctor Eduardo. They broke up in 1986.

a man of faith

In 2005 he publicly acknowledged his faith and, from that moment on, his work also entered into conversion: from the release of the album Words (2007) to the most eloquent Faith (2021). “If in an album I have turned around to see more inside of me, it is in this one. Faith It is an album that draws me as I am in conversations with God.

“Making a complete album with love songs dedicated to God is not conventional because I make ballads for couples and it’s taking a turn in which people are not used to seeing me, except in brushstrokes like The glory of Godwhich was a topic that took off very strongly”, he explained in the presentation of his new work.
