US swimmer rescued by coach after fainting in pool at World Aquatic Championships

USA's Anita Alvarez recovered from under the pool by coach after fainting during her routine

A member of the USA Artistic Swim team was rescued by her coach after she fainted near the end of her routine at the World Aquatics Championships in Budapest, Hungary on Wednesday. Underwater cameras captured the dramatic rescue as Anita Alvarez lay motionless in the pool and her coach, four-time Olympic medalist Andrea Fuentes, pulled the pigeon to the surface.

“what a day!!!” Fuentes commented in an Instagram post later Wednesday evening.

She said that Alvarez’s solo routine “was her best ever, she just crossed her limits and she found them.”
Seeing Alvarez sinking to the bottom at the end of his singles routine, the head coach quickly jumped into the water. Images from the underwater camera show Fuentes gliding through the water towards Alvarez without anyone else.
Soon others helped Fuentes drag the still unconscious Alvarez to the edge of the pool, where he received immediate medical attention before being carried on a stretcher.

“Anita is fine and the doctors also said she is fine,” Fuentes said in an Instagram post. “We all know it happens in other sports: cycling, marathons, track and field…getting back.”

Fuentes was quoted by the Spanish newspaper MARCA as saying that he pigeonholed into the pool “because the lifeguards didn’t.”

“I was scared because I could see she wasn’t breathing, but she feels great now, she’s at her best,” Fuentes told the paper.

She said the team’s coaches and doctors would decide whether lvarez should take a rest day and participate in the next events in the championship.
