Tom Hanks Makes Surprise Return To ‘SNL’ With David Pumpkins Sketch

Forrest Gump. Captain Phillips. David S. Pumpkins: Who can say which? Tom Hanks performance is more iconic than the next? But only one caused a shortage of Halloween costumes.

Yes, open your finger guns because everyone’s favorite pumpkin costume made its big return to “saturday night live” over the weekend six years after their debut.

In a hilarious skit featuring host and musical guest, rapper Jack Harlow, with cast members Ego Nwodim and Andrew Dismukes, tackle “the scariest ride” at a local amusement park.

After appearances by horror legends (Michael Myers, Annabelle, and Pennywise, oh my!), David S. Pumpkins appears more as a treat than a gimmick. And, of course, he was reunited with his trusty skeleton dancers, played once again by former cast members Bobby Moynihan and Mikey Day, who co-created the character.

“I’m David Pumpkins, and I’m going to scare the shit out of you!” Hanks, dressed in his signature ensemble, announces the group before delivering his catchphrase: “Any questions?”

His presence remains as alluring as ever to amusement park junkies trying to determine exactly what his “deal” is and what movie it came from. Apparently it hails from Ibiza, which of course just begs more questions.

“David Pumpkins is…?” the group asks, prompting Hanks to simply offer, “Taking it one day at a time!”

Pumpkins continue to appear throughout the ride to steal the limelight from their much scarier counterparts, leaving riders underwhelmed with excitement. But eventually, the group gets the scare they were promised, as the Pumpkins suddenly appear behind them at the end of the sketch.

The character was first introduced to the public when Hanks hosted “SNL” in October 2016. The sketch quickly went viral and developed a cult following. resulting in retailers nationwide selling his signature outfit.

Hanks made a brief comeback the following year in a rap parody sketch before directing his own animated show“The David S. Pumpkins Halloween Special”.

Hanks also appeared in a second cameo over the weekend in a skit titled “AA Reunion,” where Harlow pitches “the perfect idea for a Pixar movie” to her fellow band members.

As they brainstorm characters, they decide that the potential film needs someone to play “our everyman, our Woody.” Enter Hanks, who, of course, is more than qualified.
