Tom Cruise pokes fun at James Corden’s ‘Late Late Show’ departure

Tom Cruise joined James Corden in the studio for one of his first live talk shows in a while, and used the opportunity to poke fun at the recent news of Corden’s impending departure. Late Late Show.

At the top of Tuesday’s episode, Corden introduced the night’s guests—which included Cruise and his Top Gun: MaverickCo-star Monica Barbaro – Traditional in their green rooms with quick check-in.

“James! It’s a privilege to be here, and I’m sorry for the news,” shared a smiling Cruz. “I’m sorry you got fired.”

It’s been less than a week, Corden announced in a tearful monologue last Thursday, that he’d signed on to do another season of The Late Late Show, and would then drop out of the series, which he called in March. Hosted since 2015.

“But I wanted you to know I’m here for you,” Cruz continued, before Corden could correct him. “I’m here for you tonight, and whatever you need… I don’t fire you.”

“Well, I’d love if you could lend me some money,” Corden said.

“I told you, anything, James, anything,” Cruz told the audience with a laugh.

Corden signed a contract for the first host Late Late Show – Which was previously hosted by Craig Ferguson in 2014 and premiered on 23 March 2015.

After news of this being his final season, a source told ET that Corden’s exit from the show was not a surprise.

The source noted that the exact reason for Corden’s departure is unknown, but there is some discussion that he wants to spend more time with his family.

“I think all we can tell is he was ready to go,” the source said. “We saw this coming, it doesn’t surprise us.”

There’s no word yet on who will take over after Corden leaves the show next year.

late late show Airs weeknights on CBS at 12:30 p.m. ET/PT. Meanwhile, Top Gun: Maverick will hit theaters on May 27.
