Tiffany Haddish is opening up about her longtime friendship with Joe Coe, and how far the two go when it comes to their careers in comedy.
Haddish stunned on the red carpet at the premiere of her new comedy With Coy, Easter Sundayat the TCL Chinese Theater on Tuesday, and she spoke with ET’s Denny Directo about how it feels to support her longtime friend.
“That sounds amazing. Don’t make me start crying!” Haddish laughed as she held back happy tears reflecting on their 20-year friendship. “I was hungry and homeless, he was a single father who needed a babysitter. I’m not at home, only at the babysitter [comedy] club. Because I wanted stage time.”
“When I was hungry, he would get me a hotdog wrapped in bacon,” he recalled fondly. “I told him, ‘Whoever makes it first, we should look for each other. Whatever you need from me, I’ve got it.'”
Haddish explained, “Now, he’s hitting it on the stand-up scene, selling out theaters and arenas around the world. And I’m hitting it on movie screens. Then he said, ‘Tiffany, I need you’ And I said, ‘Bam! I’m here! What do you need me to do?'”
“Like, actually, he’s my brother,” he added with a warm smile. “This is my family.”
related to Easter Sunday, the film follows down-on-his-luck stand-up comic Joe (played by Coy), who brings his son to an Easter Sunday gathering with his Filipino American family. Coe spoke with ET at Tuesday’s premiere, and shared what he hopes audiences will take away from the film.
“That we are all related. We all live here and we all know each other. No matter what race you are, no matter what color you are, it’s family,” says Koy. shared.
According to Haddish, it’s this kind of representation and relatability that reinforced her decision to sign on to the project, telling ET, “That’s why I had to be a part of it!”
Easter Sunday Releasing in cinemas on August 5.
