“This Is Us” returns for the final season and brings an emotional end to it

Spoiler alert! Don’t continue unless you see the final season premiere of. didn’t see it on Tuesday This is us.

The Pearsons are back for one final hurray.

This is us started its sixth and final season on Tuesday with an episode titled “The Challenger” (a reference to the 1986 space shuttle disaster) that started the final chapter of the family. Much of the premiere picked up on much of what we knew was coming – Rebecca’s deteriorating mental state, the gradual implosion of Kate and Toby’s marriage (and the seeds of a new one with Englishman Phillip), Kevin’s and Madison’s disentanglement , Randall’s continued search for his identity – and if it served as a preview for the remaining 15 episodes, we are about to embark on an emotional journey.

While there weren’t many shocking revelations or revelations in the first episode of the final season of the outgoing NBC drama, the episode offered the truest sense of finality for the first time in its run. That the Pearson’s story would come to an end in due course. As a result, Rebecca struggled with the looming reality that her ability to recall even the smallest of memories – namely, a childhood with her father and the story of a red galley – is starting to fade and the severity of her illness is finally mounting on Kate and her Kevin.

And as Kate got used to the temporary single parent with Toby at his new job, the first seeds were sown as Kate and Phillips’ future relationship progressed, the mystery of how she and the “English idiot” come together in the near future – up to the point at which you say “yes”, as revealed in the season five finale, remains one of the show’s final secrets to be “solved”.

Then there was Randall, whose earlier experience of a nighttime burglary at his house came back unexpectedly a season ago. But not with the results he had hoped for. As Jack and Rebecca suggested in a flashback to the past, Randall’s notion of being everyone’s guardian angel would break him again and again. In fact, they were right. This time, Randall, who held out an olive branch to the man who broke into his house instead of having him locked up, learned the hard way that not everyone is ready to take the highway.

Kevin, meanwhile, faced a dilemma when he was (awkwardly) asked to restart the. to participate The man-ny, the same sitcom where he had a very public breakdown in previous years that nearly paralyzed his career. But during his tense meeting with the same producer he previously quarreled with, he realized he wasn’t going to play the title character – but the father. His reluctance to take on the new job came when he and Madison struggled to raise their twins together while they were no longer romantically involved. His decision to take on the not-quite-so-tempting gig is an attempt to give his unconventional modern family financial stability.

“I don’t think there is any preparation”, This is us Star Milo Ventimiglia told ET’s Denny Directo about last season during a launch event in Los Angeles in December. “Just know it’s coming. Know that you are likely to get emotional. You will get upset about it. When someone dies or moves on, you have many fond memories. I think it’s good to have these memories to think about, to see the show if you wanted to share them. I think that’s an important thing. What we really did with a work of art, a TV show, [is] Getting people to communicate, and that’s what I hear a lot when I’m out and about in the world talking to people. “Hey, I talked to my mother. I haven’t spoken to my mother in a while ”or“ I called my brother and we weren’t doing so well. ”I think the more people can embrace this spirit of the Pearson and actually apply it to their own lives, what for a beautiful effect. “

“It’s sad,” Justin Hartley told ET from the end. “You get used to something, it takes six years and you see these people all the time for six years … and then you say, ‘Well, we’re not going to do that in the studio. We won’t see each other. We’re not going to be working on this project that we all love so much. ‘ But the bond and the most important thing you get out of all of these acting jobs is the friendships and that group of friends has honestly become family. They are my family so I will keep in touch with each and every one of them. “

Sterling K. Brown added, who called the last season “unforgettable”: “I’m excited. I am all of these things – it’s excitement, it’s sadness, I have to say goodbye to my friends. ”He later advised that viewers would need” many boxes “of tissues to get through the season.

Before returning on Tuesday, the cast and producers reflected on their six-year journey as they began their parting.

Mandy Moore shared several flashback photos from the past few years on Instagram and wrote, “Looking back at my first few days on the set of every season of #This is us. 😍 love that it is always there @miloanthonyventimiglia (plus a cameo with @sterlingkbrown) !! I’ll miss those days with the family when it’s all over, but for now we’re getting together (almost naturally) and watching the premiere ep tonight !!! “

Brown shared a GIF of a memorable season one scene between him and Hartley as he recalled the beginning of the end. “That was @justinhartley and I today after I realized that #ThisIsUs’ FINAL PREMIERE was tonight !!!!!” he captioned on Instagram.

Hartley, meanwhile, took comic book relief when he shared a photo from the set before the infamous The man-ny Poster that served to fame as his character, Kevin. “Mondays like ‘Where Handsome Happens!’ but Tuesdays are back tonight with #ThisIsUs !!! ”wrote the actor.

Chrissy Metz felt nostalgic when she posted a series of photos from the past five years with her fellow actors on Instagram. “I got the big three emotions while taking a trip back in time to some of my favorite memories … I can’t believe it #ThisIsUsFinalChapter premiere tonight. I love you all, “was her note.

Jon Huertas, who plays Miguel, also used social media to celebrate the final season premiere.

And here’s what Executive Producer / Director Ken Olin and Creator / Executive Producer Dan Fogelman had to say before last season started.
