Bad Bunny, Adele and Morgan Wallen top the charts

NEW YORK (AP) – New data from the music industry confirm that 2021 was a very good year for Bad Bunny, Morgan Wallen, Adele and Vinyl.

MRC Data’s annual report, published in partnership with Billboard, shows that Wallen’s “Dangerous: The Double Album” ended in 2021 as the most popular country album and the most sought-after of all genres in the US with an equivalent of 3.2 million albums during the year sold.

This despite the fact that Wallen was rejected by the music industry after a video surfaced in which he expressed a racial slur. The artist has been fired from his record label, disqualified from the Country Academy Awards, and his music has been temporarily removed from radio stations and streaming services.

Bad Bunny’s “Last World Tour” was the most popular album in the Latin Music category. Not only was it the first Spanish-language album to dominate the weekly Billboard 200 charts, it had sold the equivalent of 853,900 album units in 2021.

Bad Bunny was also the most important Latin artist in 2020 with “YHLQMDLG”. His song “Dákiti” with Jhay Cortez was the most consumed in 2021 and with the greatest presence on the radio.

Other popular albums of the year are Olivia Rodrigo’s “SOUR”, Pop Smoke’s “Shoot for the Stars Aim for the Moon” and Doja Cats “Planet Her”.

Dua Lipa’s single “Levitating” was unstoppable, the biggest hit of the year with 804 million on-demand audio and video “streams”.

Adele’s “30” album brought her highest album sales in four years, with 839,000 units sold in the first week. It was the best-selling album at release since Taylor Swift’s “Reputation” in 2017.

Adele’s previous album “25” from 2015 still holds the record for the most sold albums in a single week with 3.38 million copies.

Drake’s “Certified Lover Boy” was the most popular rap album of the year 2021 in the USA with the equivalent of 1.97 million album units.

Masked Wolf’s “Astronaut in the Ocean” was the most consumed rap song of 2021.

And in this digital age, on-demand audio streaming reached an annual high of 988.1 billion streams. At the same time, there was a lot of retro sentiment: for the first time since MRC Data began measuring music sales in 1991, vinyl sales outpaced CDs as the best-selling physical format.

Physical vinyl sales rose less than 2% in 2011 but ended with more than half of physical album sales in 2021, for a total of 41.7 million albums.

The data showed that the volume of new music streaming was decreasing from year to year. Music fans turned to their old favorites.

They come with everything

Beyoncé, Madonna, Rosalía, Kendrick Lamar and Red Hot Chili Peppers … after a sparse 2021 of big names, the stars are preparing their return with one eye on an omicron and another where vaccination will finally allow Covid- 19 into an anecdote and amortizing his new albums on world tours.
