Theo James and Rose Leslie (Exclusive) on Taking a Romantic Leap With 'Time Traveler's Wife'

The stars of the HBO adaptation talk to ET about working together again after 'Downton Abbey' and those nude scenes.

Theo James and Rose Leslie reunite for a romantic drama with a timely twist.

HBO The Time Traveler’s Wife, the new six-episode adaptation of the best-selling novel by Audrey Niffenegger, follows married couple Claire Abshire (Leslie) and Henry DeTamble (James), whose marriage is complicated by time travel. Written by Steven Moffat (doctor who, sherlock) and directed by David Nutter (game of Thrones), the series also stars Desmin Borges as Gomez and Natasha Lopez as Charis.

before joining time traveler’s wifeJames and Leslie briefly worked together Downton Abbey, However, James admitted that he does not remember their encounter. (Leslie played housewife Gwen Dawson, while James played Mr. Kemal Pamuk in a short Season 1 arc.)

“We did, didn’t we, Theo?” Leslie asked, laughing, when the bid was made.

“Obviously we met Downton Abbey But I didn’t remember it,” confessed James. “Maybe because I was so nervous! Rose was on the show, I was just kind of fleeting.”

years later their downton Anubhav, the two will hit the small screen in the latest interpretation of Niffenegar’s book. As Leslie and James point out, the attraction to the story and screenplay was immediate, with James stating that Moffatt, Nutter and HBO behind the project made it even more appealing.

“All the boxes were checked,” Leslie told ET’s Lauren Zima. “Theo and I have both said that just by reading [script] When we were auditioning, it really hammered home the fact that we would love to be a part of this project and that’s why we worked hard to get it.”

but it won’t be the first time traveler’s wife As the novel was first brought to life on the big screen in 2009 film with Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana. Leslie wasn’t concerned about any possible comparisons between the show and the movie.

“I haven’t seen the movie and so I can’t make any comparisons … but I definitely read the book because I knew I would be playing Claire,” she said. “But I didn’t want to overwhelm myself with too many versions of this character. I think Steven’s writing is very rich. It’s brilliant. It has depth. It has constant subtext and that was enough for me to feel.” For that I was doing Claire justice in this adaptation, rather than having so many different versions of her in my head. And I felt this book was enough to draw on her past and her upbringing for me. But portraying him, I hoped on Steven’s words.”

Part of the hook for the time-travel story is that James’ Henry, who thrusts back and forth through the continuum of time, finds himself naked every time he wakes up – no matter where in the timeline. Ho.

“Luckily it wasn’t winter that helped me,” James quipped when asked about his character’s crude entrance. “It’s so part of the DNA of the story that it didn’t feel strange. And one thing we really worked on was trying to root this idea of time travel as much as possible, so when that time travels , then he is thrown out a second time. He doesn’t know where he is, when he is. It exhausts him physically. He sweats, he’s hungry, he’s tired and it makes him old. And then when he takes off, he’s completely naked, which is great comedy. On the one hand because it provides comedy to the show, but on the other, you’re full of fear because there’s a lot of danger in it. And we wanted to play both.”

“My only anchoring point was the book,” he continued. “He runs every day – the idea in the book is that he has to run because it puts out enough energy so he doesn’t jump around in time. It’s part of the law of time-travel so it’s that sort of thing. Was really, and you know, trying not to drink too much alcohol.”

Because The Time Traveler’s Wife With jumps in time—his wife Henry meets for the first time when she’s only six, for example—Leslie credits the production crew for helping her out and James keeps everything straight.

“Was it difficult? The production side of things was brilliant at scheduling every day for us and they were very accommodating in realizing that if we were just one day as one age, instead of turning into one particular day from different ages, we could see that. If I can, that would be great,” he said. “We were lucky that we were able to know where we were in the scene every day and we could ask our script supervisor whenever we needed to, what age we were doing and where we were in our relationship. “

As for old-fashioned makeup, James said it had “various etymologies”. “I think it worked well with Rose. She looked instantly old but elegant and touching on your own mom,” he said. “Mine, I think they went too deep and I looked like a turtle’s head.”

“They went too far for Theo to test the camera first and then you guys called it back. And the end result was… you tinkered with it right,” Leslie agreed.

game of Thrones The alum admitted she couldn’t help showing off her aged look to husband Kit Harington: “I FaceTimed my husband straight away and he was chuckled!”

“I don’t think my wife saw me because she must have been scared,” joked James. “I looked like Voldemort/Ursula.”
