The Shape of Water, the most anticipated sequel

Director James Cameron is not intimidated by long films, as he proved with the first Avatar, from 2009, which lasted 162 minutes. now it comes Avatar: The Shape of Waterand already announced that it will last three hours, or 180 minutes. As the director said in April at the CinemaCon convention, the premiere will be on December 15 in Argentina.

In a report for Empire magazine, Cameron spoke on the subject: “I don’t want to hear anyone complaining about the length of the film, when they usually spend eight hours watching continuous episodes of any series.”

And he continued to protest: “I can already imagine the critics saying that such a long movie is agony. Come on! I’ve seen my own children sit watching five chapters in a row, one hour each. You just have to get used to the idea seeing people getting up from the living room to go to the bathroom and coming right back.

Nor is it a matter of contradicting the director and telling him that he is exaggerated, since the facts have proven him right: Avatar grossed more than $2.8 billion and became the highest-grossing film in history for ten years, when it was dethroned by Avengers: Endgamealthough a re-launch in China put it back in the top spot last year.

In May the first trailer for Avatar: The Shape of Water. It premiered in theaters last Thursday the 5th, accompanying the launch of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Although not much is known about the plot of the film, it is known that it is set more than a decade after the events that took place in the first film.

The plot tells the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri and their children) and the danger they must face and “the efforts they make to stay safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure”, according to an official statement.

Again directed by James Cameron and produced by Cameron and Jon Landau, the film will star many of the original film’s cast members, including Zoe Saldana as Neytiri, Sigourney Weaver (in a new role), and Sam Worthington as Jake Sully.

Joining the cast are Kate Winslet as Ronal, Michelle Yeoh as Dr. Karina Mogue, and Oona Chaplin as Varang, among others. The new movie will pick up where the original left off, with Sully and Neytiri building their family on the planet Pandora and fighting new threats to their burgeoning civilization.

There will also be Stephen Lang (but Colonel Miles Quiaritch didn’t die in the first…?), Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement and Giovanni Ribisi.
