Hilary Duff knew the second she read the script How I met your father, Hulu’s imminent split from How I met your motherthat she had to jump on board. The 34-year-old actress has just run a seven-season run Younger (and an unsuccessful attempt at resuscitation Lizzie McGuire at Disney +) when the project landed on her lap.

The series that the creative team quickly referred to as the “standalone sequel” HIMYM, follows Duff’s Sophie, who in the near future tells her son the story of how she met his father. Like the original, HIMYF takes viewers back to 2022, when Sophie and her close circle of friends are about to find out who they are, what they want in life, and how to fall in love in this age of dating apps and limitless possibilities.

“I’m very happy to play Sophie,” said Duff, who was seven to eight months pregnant when she first read the script, told reporters Tuesday during the Television Critics Association’s virtual winter press tour. “I’m so drawn to parts that are extremely relatable, and this one only touches on trying to find love in this world we live in, with all the possibilities there are and how difficult it is meeting someone face to face and the fact that she has this wonderful group of friends who come together in a strange way. It was all very attractive to me. “

“Even though I’m in a completely different place in my life, I was just drawn to Sophie and that we had a lot in common,” Duff said, referring to his married mother of three. “She doesn’t give up. She fights somehow, the odds are somehow against her … but she relies on this little pack of madmen that she finds one night and they all run off into the sunset together and all these experiences are made by the young people trying to gain a foothold … The script was everything you could want in a pilot. “

While the format of HIMYF follows a similar format to the original series, with narration from an older version of Sophie (voiced by Kim Cattrall) and flashbacks as well as flashbacks, Duff and the producers claim this show stands on its own.

“We are our own show. The original show was so great and they were so connected, but this is their own show, ”said Duff. “We’re trying to make something original by stealing a few things from them that worked really well.”

Added producer Pamela Fryman, who has directed dozen of episodes of HIMYM and returns here to the management: “I can take one away from the fact that I was there How I met your mother it’s not that long How I met your mother. And i loved How I met your mother. That is How I met your father and it’s so spectacular in itself. When we watched the sizzle, I got the feeling, ‘We did that.’ From the first day on stage with masks … we started rehearsing and we knew straight away that we had something. “It’s a remarkable gift.”

That is not to say HIMYF will largely ignore the presence of its predecessor. Since it exists in the same world, Easter eggs of the past will be widespread. For example, an early episode relates to Ted Mosby’s apartment.

“I think the fans are going to be really excited about the things that are peppered there throughout the season,” teased executive producer and showrunner Elizabeth Berger.

“People keep referring to the show as a restart and it’s not a restart,” repeated executive producer and showrunner Isaac Aptaker. “This is referred to as a standalone sequel, which means it is set in the world of the previous show, but it really is its own thing. That means we love it How I met your mother, We know how many people are doing it. [Original producers] Carter [Bays], Craig [Thomas] and Pam are very involved in the show and there will be lots of little rewards for people who love the original that I think will please those who have never seen them How I met your mother and who are totally in love with the show. “

What Duff hopes women in their late 20s or early 30s navigating the rocky waters of the dating world take with them as they watch Sophie and her circle of friends go about their personal and professional lives, there is one important point she wants them to remember.

“Just that you are not alone. It’s brutal out there. Just having your friends support system, ”Duff said. “There’s obviously a bit of the hype about ‘Oh, she’s going to date this person or she’s going to date that person.’ But we’re all this tight-knit group of friends, and we just rely on the people you love and the experiences you have in your early 30. Sophie is not quite what she would have imagined and she just beats a little bit and everyone around her helps her straighten her up. Not that she’s out of whack in any way, but she just navigates. And it’s so relatable and I can’t tell you how many friends are in that area. “

“I really enjoy playing because I’m in a completely different room that is turning over somewhere,” she continued with a laugh. “I think it’s great that New York City is a big part of the show, it moves really fast and the more you get into the characters, it’s not just about Sophie’s story. We dive into each of these characters and watch these bonds happen. The show is really about friendship and just the fact that Sophie is very bubbly and hard to get under control. She is beaten, but she keeps trying. It’s a feel-good show, it’s a good time. It’s funny and it’s real and you’re sure to get some heart drawn moments. “

The first two episodes of How I met your father Drop Tuesday January 18th on Hulu. Please see below for more information.
