The Oscars would once again be a full ceremony and all the prizes would be awarded during the gala.

The new CEO of the Hollywood Academy, Bill Kramer, expressed his intention that the Oscar Awards be announced again the winners of all the awards during the galainstead of handing out the statuettes for the technical categories one hour before the live broadcast.

Kramer, who took office for the first time last month, stated in A.Framethe magazine of the Academy, that he would like to see again “that all artistic and scientific disciplines are honored during the show“, although at the moment neither the institution nor the ABC network that broadcasts the awards have confirmed the change.

“We need to produce an Oscar that celebrates the collaborative work of the industry,” he added.

How was the last edition?

In the last edition of the awards, of the 23 categories that make up the Oscar Awards, eight were announced before the gala beganwhile the red carpet was over and the vast majority of guests had not yet sat down at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles (USA).

Then, during the broadcast, a summary was issued with the reactions of the winners.

The categories affected They were best documentary, best editing, best makeup and hairdressing, best production design, best sound, best short film, best animated short film and best soundtrack.

Disadvantaged Latinos

The change reduced the Hispanic presence at the ceremony, as Spaniards Alberto Mielgo and Leo Sánchez picked up the Oscar for best animated short for The Windshield Wiper during this stretch.

That decision angered manyand union organizations representing publishers, musicians and sound engineers proposed organizing a boycott and proposed that the nominees reject the invitation to the ceremony.

In 2018, the Academy announced its intention to remove the technical awards from the gala and deliver them during the commercial break, but retracted after the rejection of the cinephile community.

Other awards, such as the Grammys and the Latin Grammys, deliver most of the awards in a previous ceremony that is not broadcast on television, although in their case they have almost a hundred categories (several for each style of music) compared to 23 of the Oscars.

A gala with fewer applicants

Last year, a total of 276 films competed to be nominated for the Oscar for the best film of the year, the most important category of the Hollywood Academy Awards, which means the lowest record in the last ten years due to the pandemic.

One of the reasons that explained this significant decrease in the registration of applicants, released by the Academy, is that the eligibility period for that edition was only 10 months, since in 2020, when the gala was postponed to the end April, the deadline was also extended to films released in January and February 2021.

That extension caused 366 films to aspire to win the Oscar for best film, the largest number in the last 50 years. However, in the 94th edition -the last-, only films released between March 1 and December 31, 2021 could compete.
