The man behind this series as showrunner is Michael Showalter, head of acclaimed comedies such as Wet Hot American Summer and An inseparable love (The Big Sick, in its original title) and the biopic Tammy Faye’s eyes, with Jessica Chastain.
Based on real events
Inspired by true events and a podcast of the same name, shows how the manipulation and psychological and economic exploitation for decades by psychiatrist Dr. Isaac “Ike” Herschkopf (Rudd) towards his patient “Marty” Markowitz (Ferrell).
Herschkopf takes advantage of Markowitz, a chronically insecure man who inherited his father’s textile company. The psychiatrist takes advantage of him and cheats him, something that happened over the years: the plot spans no less than three decades and begins in the ’80s.
Who was Dr. Herschkopf
The series captures the spirit of the eponymous podcast of 2019, which arose from real events.
In real life, Dr. Herschkopf was noted for his unconventional methods and his way of motivating his patients, among whom were celebrities such as the actress Gwyneth Paltrow or the athlete OJ Simpson.
Markowitz began visiting his office in 1981, when he felt overwhelmed by his responsibilities in the company he inherited, while he was dealing with the grief over the death of his parents.
The psychiatrist took advantage of this situation to control all aspects of his life, breaking all ethical boundaries between doctor and patient.
Behind the success of the series is the creator of “Succession” and “Veep”.
In this way, over thirty years the doctor took financial control of the Markowitz family, was responsible for severing his patient’s social ties and even went to live in his home in the Hamptons (a wealthy area of weekend properties on Long Island, outside of New York), of which he pretended be an owner.
The relationship ended in 2010, when Markowitz reacted and began to fight to regain control of his life. When journalist Joe Nocera, Marty’s neighbor, learned about his story, he transformed it into a podcast (from which the series took the title) that in 2019 it became a phenomenon in the United States.
Kathryn Hahn, new star
In the series it is seen how Herschkopf was weaving a net to catch his patient. At first he helps him cope with his conflicts, so Marty trusts him and opens the doors of his personal life. But there is someone who suspects the doctor: it is Marty’s sister, Phyllis.

Kathryn Hahn, who took on the starring role from her role as the witch Agatha Harkness in WandaVision, returns to look like this shrewd woman who does not take long to get the record from the psychiatrist. She warns her brother that it is not normal for a doctor to get involved in the lives of his patients in this way.
But Herschkopf He is the owner of an enormous talent to psychologically manipulate others, and it also makes her fall into his traps. He separates the brothers and in this way he gets into the Markowitz family after discovering that they are richer than he believed. Then come up with a plan to strip them of everything.
