‘Stranger Things 4’ star Jamie Campbell Bower (exclusive) on the ‘beautiful experience’ of playing Vecna

“At first, I was really overwhelmed with gratitude for being a part of the show,” Bower told ET’s Will Marfugi. “It was a really weird and beautiful experience, the whole process of getting the role, meeting Matt and Ross. The 33-year-old English actor not only had a great start, but was “delighted” to play such an epic role in the latest, mega- installment of the hit series. “I’ve always loved characters that have truth and patience and, you know, honesty to them,” he says. “I saw a lot of honesty in Henry, in Forest and also in Vecna. For me, as an actor and as a performer, I always want to go as far as I can. And this was an opportunity to do that.”

“It was just amazing, total bliss,” says Bower.

The actor also embraces the fact that audiences not only think that Vecna ​​is the scariest villain to feature in the series, but one of the scariest things they’ve seen on TV in a long time. “I laugh often,” he says. “I’m British, so I’m often even terrible at, you know, receiving compliments. But it takes a village, doesn’t it? And to be able to be a small part of bringing something to life like this It’s a privilege and it’s an honor.”

Of course, when he auditioned for the series, he didn’t know the full scale of the character he was going to play. It was only after meeting the creators that he got clarity on many aspects of his character. “It was at that point, when I met him, that things started to unfold and he started telling me, you know who this person was and what I was supposed to do. I was just humming.”

By the end of Season 4, the full scale of Vecna’s terror is revealed when she takes over the gang, first killing Eddie (Joseph Quinn) and then nearly ending Max’s (Sadie Sink) life. But before he can fully enact his revenge on Hawkins, he is brought down by Nancy (Natalia Dyer) and the others as his body is set on fire, blown up by a shotgun and destroyed by his old home. was thrown out the window.

Looking back on filming that final showdown, Bower says, “It was amazing.”

“We were all together on that last day and that was, I think, the last day of shooting too,” he recalls. “I especially remember watching that shotgun scene and I was standing with Matt and Ross on the monitor, because often I want to see what my other team members are doing because I find it fascinating. And that Looked so cool. I turned to the boys and I was like, ‘This is amazing. She looks so dope. This is so sick.’ And they were like, ‘Okay?’ So, it was really cute to see someone else, you know, look badass on camera.”

He says, “It was, you know, it felt right. Everything felt right for the character.”

Of course, Vecna’s body is nowhere to be found before the finale is over, suggesting that he will return another day to wreak havoc, especially when the Upside Down eventually breaks into the real world. But when it comes to Vecna’s return in Season 5, Bower says, “I can’t possibly say. You’ve got to hold your breath.”
