Sheryl Crow with her 'devastating' struggle with fame and what her life is like now (EXCLUSIVE)

ET spoke with Crow ahead of the release of her new documentary and album.

Sheryl Crow is getting real about mental health. ET’s Lauren Zima visited the singer’s ranch in Nashville, where she opened up about her struggles with fame and how her relationship with being famous has evolved over the years.

“I think we’ve gotten better at talking about our mental health. I mean, of course we’ve seen… This past year has been an incredible example of how fragile our mental health is. And I think we’re starting to get into a really healthy place where it’s okay to talk about conflicts and chemical conflicts,” Crowe, who has spoken about the topic frequently, said. “I think the way I’ve been made has promoted my art. It’s inspired me to become an artist. But at the same time, it’s also something I’ve struggled with.”

She continued, “Really high highs, really low lows. And it’s a work in progress all the time, but at least I know what it means to be in the throes of one of those, and figure it out.” How do I focus myself?

It might have been easy for him to talk about it now, but those conversations were even harder for actors like Crowe, who was just 10 or 20 years old.

“If people talk about mental conflicts, there was something really wrong with you, and you were damaged, you were damaged goods,” Crowe said. “And I think we are seeing now that not only famous people and not just people who are achieving, but people from all walks of life, including our children, are struggling. We need to have a dialogue like that. One who is persistent and sympathetic.”

While making her documentary, sherrillThe songstress not only looked past her struggles with mental health, but also with fame.

Crowe said of the Showtime doc, “It’s an interesting thing to me. Making this documentary felt like I was reviewing someone else’s life.” “It’s so weird now when I think about it, because this morning I woke up, I took my kids to school. I have a sick horse, so we had to put our horse down tomorrow. It’s my life now.” , and I love my life.”

She continued, “When I think before I moved here and adopted my kids – I had parties for the Rolling Stones in my house. John Travolta would be there, Gwyneth. He was my life, and my life was about being in that world.” , and I loved it. There was a lot of pressure to be an artist as well as entering my forties and everyone on the radio entering their teens, be it Brittany, Christina Aguilera And there I am, turning 40. Then all of a sudden you’re no longer relevant.”

The “If It Makes You Happy” singer likened fame to a coat of paint that tends to crack when applied.

“Once you start seeing cracks and experience what those cracks mean, it’s devastating,” she said. “If you’re a sensitive person, it’s almost like you’ve been invited to a cool party and then all of a sudden you’re not invited anymore, and it’s no fault of your own. It’s just a weird mindset. “

While navigating fame has taken Crow down quite a winding path, the documentary allows her to look back on those times and look back on them lovingly, knowing that “everything turned out great.”

,[It’s] To be able to look back on those times and experience them from afar is really wonderful that I have now and knowing that everything turned out great. It would be a different story, obviously, if things were not as they are now. But what an incredible time,” she shared, noting that “fame, there’s no booklet for it. So there’s no way of knowing how you’re going to respond to it.”

The life of crows looks quite different these days. She lives with her two teenage boys on a farm in Nashville, and while she’s thousands of miles away from the spotlight, she still has plenty of friends from her time in Hollywood with whom she still keeps in touch.

“I still have dear friends. Obviously, Laura Dern is in the movie and she will always be family to me,” she said of their close relationship big little lie Actress. “I have so many friends in Los Angeles. I lived there for years, and they’re friends that if I haven’t seen them for a year, they still are… We start where we left off. “

Although her day to day has changed, Crow is not completely divorced from fame. In addition to his upcoming holiday movie — When Christmas was young – She has a new album coming out, which will be a mix of her old hits and some new tracks as well.

“It’s been really humbling,” Crowe said of making the album. “I mean, it’s just crazy to know that a song like ‘All I Want to Do’ that I didn’t think was really that important for a song, took us to Russia. It took us to South America. It Took us to Japan, and people who don’t or don’t speak English were singing that song. And now, being able to write a song like ‘Forever’, which is and still is on the soundtrack [feel] That’s about what’s happening right now, just how good is his gift.”

And to realize, well, that song that’s new, that nobody’s heard, is as important to me as ‘All I Want to Do’ was,” she said. “It’s a good feeling. “
