‘Sailing Sunset’ Boss Adam DiVello on Emmy Nom, New Cast Members and ‘The Hills’ Reboot (Exclusive)

netflix reality series, selling sunset, is once again an Emmy nominee. The series, which follows the personal and professional lives of real estate agents at the Oppenheim Group, has received its second consecutive nomination for Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program. And executive producer Adam DiVello isn’t taking it for granted.

“It’s absolutely amazing,” says the series creator. “The first thing I thought to say, we were twice nominated, is unbelievable. Last season it was completely unexpected. And again, we don’t take anything lightly and we go for the nominations. Very grateful to the Television Academy.”

Speaking to ET about the series’ nominations for the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards, DiVello also explained why the series has garnered award recognition on other long-running reality shows, how the cast was played off-screen. The drama will go on in Seasons 6 and 7, and what he thinks about the latest reboot the hills,

ET: When you get news like this, will the cast and crew have time to celebrate? Will you guys meet at all?

Adam DiVello: We are in the middle of the season right now. We are just about to start season 6. So, we have a big group lesson and we’re all texting each other back and forth. I know Jason and Brett are on a plane right now, flying back from Mykonos and I think everyone is back in LA so we’re all texting. But I am sure that once we are all in the same situation again, we will celebrate in some way, shape or form.

Which of the text chains has had the best response?

This is a good question. They are similar to a large extent. Lots of fireworks emoji. but i think chelsea [Lazkani]Probably most excited because it was with us in his first season. And he is ready to bring it.

what is it about selling sunset in particular you feel has resonated with the Academy and is attracting attention to shows like housewives or even the hills back in the day?

This is a good question. I mean, back in the day, I don’t think shows like this happen the hills Nominated for Emmys. You know, the world has changed a lot and the television landscape has changed so much to make room for shows like this. I don’t know what it looks like housewives And those other shows.

I guess the only difference is, like, these are very ambitious women, you know? They are very empowered women and they are working and they are building their career and they are building their business and they are making money and they are really out there to do the job and do it well. are out of. They are, in a way, the best of the best. So, I think maybe it has some aspiration that maybe some other shows don’t have.

Given how big Season 5 was, how do you expect it to move forward?

Everything just needs to be bigger and better. Big house, big sale. I mean, we already have a lot of work to do. You know, the Oppenheim Group, as an agency, has grown, and so has their listing and their roster. We have some new agents joining the season. In such a situation, some new faces are going to come in the show.

With the cast becoming famous in their own right and making headlines mid-season for their personal and professional news, how do you know what to bring to the show and make sure it makes it to the next season?

I think social media content helps keep the audience engaged between seasons. It’s a long stretch between our seasons. But thankfully, there is social media that keeps them in the public eye. So, I think some of those stories will obviously carry over into the next season and some won’t. I think if it’s not really relevant to real estate or any of the stories we’ve told so far, we usually stay away from it.

Sure, you know, we left last season with a lot of cliffhangers. And so, I think we’re going to take this season back and answer a lot of the questions that we left people with last season.

Selling Sunset Season 5
Netflix

Speaking of cliffhangers, I think the biggest question on everyone’s mind is, what does Christine Quinn’s future hold on the show? Can you at least set the record straight on that?

I don’t have anything to share at this time. I’m sorry, I’m not.

In terms of the rest of the cast, you said you were bringing in new people. How do you know when to expand or bring in new cast?

This is a reality show. So, we just followed Jason’s lead and Jason puts in place and he hires people as needed. And I think as the agency grows, they need more agents and I think that’s all that it is. So, if he hires new people then we put them on the show. This is how it works. So, we’re very fortunate to have found some great new agents that we’re very excited to introduce.

You said earlier that with future seasons, it’s all about growing up and just moving on. But do you see where the flow or direction of the show can go? Obviously it’s real-estate based, but have you ever seen what other stories you can actually tell? selling sunset,

Well, it kind of evolved as the seasons passed, right? I think season 1 was very real-estate heavy. And then with the introduction of Chrishell [Stause], we kind of got into his life. When they got divorced, suddenly their personal life became a part of the show, which we were not set to do earlier. And then his personal life started to take a big turn. And then, apparently, when she started dating Jason that affects the story.

So, I think we’ll see more of his personal life and what he’s going on outside of work, as well as even more sales and more real estate.

Since You Mentioned Chrishell’s Relationships, Can We Wait For Her Latest Relationships [with G Flip] Being part of the series? Do you think it will have a significant impact on the new season?

You know, we just started pre-production last week, so I don’t have an answer on that right now. But whenever we start a new season, we sit down with each of the cast and talk about what’s happening, what’s happening in their lives and what they want to share. So, we’re hoping she stays open and let us show her that side of her life.

Chrishell has been a trooper from day one. I appreciate her in every season that she gives us as much as she gives. And I hope she continues to do so.

When someone like Maya Wander, who left the show after Season 5, is sharing a lot on social media about her personal life and what’s going on with her, are you ready to go back and tie things up? Thinking about moving in with her again, or planning to check in with the guys who left the series?

Pucca. And we never considered Maya to leave the show. She will come back. She will come back sometime. I think for her, with all the kids and travelling, coming here every week for filming is a little too much. So, I think when there is an event or something special is happening, we will definitely see that.

with selling sunset Season 7 is being renewed through – I guess it’s a show that people can follow for a long time – but have you thought about the end date or do you keep pushing it until Unless otherwise stated?

When we do these shows, I never think of an end date to be with them. I guess it’s all about the cast, right? So, as long as we have a good cast, we can keep going and we will keep going. And I think Jason is on board for the long haul. You know, agents are going to come and go. and like housewives, it doesn’t really need to end. You can keep going.

Apart from this, it has other avatars. to like, Selling OC Coming up next month and that’s Jason’s office in Orange County. That’s a whole other cast of agents. So, I think if anything, we can not only keep going, but I think we can branch out into other cities in other regions.

with the news that the hills The reboot is being done with an entirely new cast, are you a part of it? Are you interested to see where he goes?

I’m not a part of, you know, I made the original series. I am not part of the new. So, it will be interesting to see. I really don’t know much about it. I only know what you’ve read, so I’m equally curious to see what it’s all about.
