Ryan Reynolds Recalls 'Beautiful' Moment His Brothers Saved Him From His Father (Exclusive)

The 45-year-old actor is the first guest on Season 4 of David Letterman’s hit Netflix talk show, My Next Guest needs no introductionAnd ET has an exclusive sneak peek at the moment, with Reynolds telling one of his brothers that getting his ears pierced “would be a good idea, a good thing” when he was about 12.

Reynolds, who called the pop duo Wham! It may have had something to do with her interest in getting his ears pierced, she said, telling her brother about the idea, and immediately her brother warned her that things could get ugly with her father, James. Huh.

Reynolds recalls, “My brother said, ‘You’re going to die.’ are.”

Reynolds says, “I walk to the dinner table and all I remember was sweat dripping down my lap and I look down and I can feel his gaze on me.” “He swears something under his breath, and I look up and I look around and I see that all three of my brothers had gotten an earring to save me.”

Hearing the amusing story, Letterman exclaims, “Oh my god,” to which Reynolds replies, “Yeah, one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen in my life.”

This isn’t the first time Reynolds has spoken out about this story. Back in 2014, Reynolds wrote an essay for timeThe “Time for Thanks” series in which he opened up about the piercing story, describing his father as “the toughest man alive: a former cop, former boxer and full-time landmine”.

Reynolds, the youngest of four boys, said that his father “worked tirelessly to support his family and, in return, you were expected to do what he said often before he did.” ” He continued, “In a word, he was scary. Not because he was sadistic or physically abusive. He was scary because he was one of those guys who was an energetic ‘weight’ to him.”

He further painted a picture of his father saying, “Transferring his weight so slightly from one leg to the other can make an otherwise joyous 6th birthday party feel like an Irish funeral.”

Reynolds has also been open about the broken relationship with her father, who died in 2015 after a long battle with Parkinson’s. But it was his wife, Blake Lively, who encouraged him to patch things up before he died, and he did.

In fact, Reynolds and Lively named their first daughter James.

“It felt right. All family relationships come with some complications,” he said in a 2018 interview. “At the end of the day, it is easier to focus on the good things than the bad. My father died soon after my daughter was born, but he saw her, which made me happy.”
