Reese Witherspoon looks at Tom Cruise and is confident that Legally Blonde 3 is going to be done

In these times of multiple weekly releases between cinema and streaming, fans of legally blondethe comedy that catapulted to fame Reese witherspoonare still waiting for news about the third film.

In a recent interview, the protagonist of the films hinted that she is not sure that there will be a sequel, despite the fact that it was announced and has been in the pre-production process for a long time, longer than the actress herself expected.

However, Witherspoon also spoke of a recent precedent such as that of Top Gun Maverick, whose sequel was released 36 years after the original and became a worldwide box office hit. The Oscar winner recently told USAToday that he hopes the film – once had a 2022 release date – will start production in the right way.

“I still hope that Legally Blonde 3 is done the right way. It is like top gun. They waited a long time to do another version of that movie, and I loved the touch of nostalgia that they added to it,” said the actress and producer of Big Little Lies.

“That definitely gave us a lot of inspiration about what we’d like to do with Elle Woods – the character of legally blonde– as well as making sure we have the same cornerstones that people cared about back then,” he added.

“I feel like these characters are my friends, so I protect them. I would never do a subpar, lackluster version of those stories,” she clarified, almost as if explaining why the sequel is taking so long.

Top Gun: Maverickthe new action film – it had Tom Cruise back as “Maverick” – was a box office boom: it accumulated 650 million dollars in the United States and Canada and 1,300 million globally, which made it the highest grossing film of star race Mission Impossible.

It seems difficult that the third installment of legally blonde may have similar box office success. But it is still a hopeful precedent.

A long overdue sequel

Witherspoon comes trying to get off the ground Legally Blonde 3 since at least 2018, when MGM announced the film was in development and was targeting a 2020 release date.

legally blonde was a hit for MGM in 2001, grossing $141.8 million worldwide. The second film of was released in 2003 and accumulated 124.9 million.

The plot focuses on Elle Woods (Witherspoon), the typical cheerful and naive frat girl who seems to have it all: she is pretty, popular, has money, good taste in design and fashion, and an ideal boyfriend who is the son of the governor.

But everything falls apart the night he leaves her just when she thought he was going to propose. She then decides to study law at Harvard University – where Warner studies – to show him that she is a serious woman.

The comedy that launched Witherspoon to stardom also starred Luke Wilson, Selma Blair, Matthew Davis, Victor Garber and Jennifer Coolidge, among others.
