Prosecutors in Spain are asking Shakira to face up to eight years and two months in prison if she is found guilty of alleged tax fraud in her scheduled trial.

Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll has been accused by the Spanish government of failing to pay €14.5 million in taxes between 2012 and 2014, a period during which she has been accused of six tax offenses. According to Spanish prosecutors, Shakira will face a prison sentence of up to eight years and a fine of 24 million euros.

International media reported that Shakira this week rejected an arbitration agreement and opted to go to court, for which no date has been set. In a statement, her publicists pointed out that the pop star has always cooperated with the authorities and accused the Spanish tax authority of violating the singer’s rights. Shakira’s team reported that the 45-year-old Colombian interpreter deposited the amount she allegedly owed, in addition to three million euros in interest.

However, the payment does not prevent Shakira from sitting on the defendants’ bench for allegedly serious crimes against the Treasury. Shakira’s team is working on a strategy for the singer to reach an agreement and get less than two years in prison, after which she would avoid jail as she has no criminal record. According to authorities, Shakira avoided paying her taxes in Spain from 2012 to 2014, using a business network with ramifications in various tax havens to hide her income and assets.

Barcelona prosecutors claim the Grammy winner spent more than half of each year in Spain between 2012 and 2014, on which she should have paid taxes in the country.
