Prince Harry appeared during a virtual ceremony to honor the recipients on Friday Diana AwardAnd reflected on how he feels about Princess Diana’s presence now more than ever.
The Duke of Sussex, commenting on what would have been the late royal’s 61st birthday, said: “There has not been a day in the last two and a half decades where I have not thought about the mark he left, not just on that day.” Me and my brother, but on the lives of all of us.”
The purpose of the Diana Award is to honor young people who work to improve the lives of others. Established in 1999, the award is given to recipients between the ages of nine and up to 25 years of age. This year, 180 young philanthropists were honored for their work, and Harry said he couldn’t help looking at their legacy when he saw them at work.
“I see his legacy in all of you,” said Harry. “I see her legacy in a Diana Award community that spans several generations. Whenever I meet families, youth and children from all corners of the world, I see her legacy. And, when I see my mother.” When I look, I see my mother’s legacy. Every day my children.”
Harry, who shares two children – Archie, 3, and Lillibet, 1 – with Meghan Markle also spoke about how his mother inspired him to “fight for a better world”.
“My mother inspired me and all of us to speak up and fight for a better world,” he said. “And now, as a husband and parent, my mother’s voice is even louder in my life. You all have helped keep her voice alive by showing the world how every little action counts.” How much kindness is still valued, and how our world could be better if we choose to do so.”
At the end of the virtual ceremony, Harry said that “no matter who you are or where you are from or what your background is, you can make a positive difference in our world.” He continued, “I know that the memory of my mother will never fade away, as I see her soul in each of you. So, thank you for keeping her fire alive.”
The father of three wrote, “You are part of an inspiring generation of young people who are changing the world with your actions, and I greatly admire your efforts.” “Your stories are remarkable. Many of you face great challenges in tough times, yet you are tirelessly breaking down barriers to create a better future for all of us.”
William continued, “Thank you for your compassion, bravery and absolute determination. You are truly a mark of my mother’s legacy and I know she would be very proud of all of you.”
