Prince Charles is looking to rebuild bridges with his son, Prince Harry, and daughter-in-law Meghan Markle. The efforts are the result of a desire to be involved in the life of their grandchildren.

ET recently had a meeting with royal expert Katie Nicholl, who explained the significance behind the recent emotional meeting between Harry and Meghan’s children and their grandparents, Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, earlier this month.

“I think a lot of people don’t see Charles as a doting grandfather, but he absolutely is,” Nicole told ET. “He has spent more time with the Cambridges’ grandchildren in recent years and he looks forward to building a closer relationship with Meghan and Harry’s children.”

The private visit – which came in the midst of Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations – was the first time Charles had seen his 3-year-old grandson, Archie, sometime, and the first time he met his 1-year-old granddaughter, Lily.

According to Nicole, Charles “deeply cherishes being with his grandchildren at the moment” and he is “deeply sad that there aren’t enough of them with Archie and Lillibet.”

“I know Charles absolutely wants to start fixing that broken relationship with Harry,” Nicole said, adding that the private meeting was probably “the very beginning” of his efforts to mend the fence, and “Paved the way for some more reconciliation” talks.”

“He loves his son but he wants to forgive his son for everything. He wants to mend that relationship and move on,” Nicole said. “A big part of that is that he wants to be a grandfather and see those grandchildren. That might mean a few more transatlantic trips, but he wants to enjoy the experience.”

During Harry and Meghan’s visit to the UK, Queen Elizabeth also got personally introduced to Lily, which is her namesake, for the first time. Harry and Meghan previously spent time with the Queen in April.

“It was great to be with her. It was great to see her,” Harry said during an interview todayHoda Kotb of the same month. “She’s in great form. She always has a great sense of humour with me. It was really nice to meet her.”

While in the UK, Lily celebrated her first birthday at her parents’ old house at Frogmore Cottage. Harry and Meghan invited close family and friends to their home—where they recently renewed the lease—for an intimate, backyard picnic celebration.
