Oprah Winfrey is giving her father a surprise gift! On Monday, the 68-year-old media mogul threw her father, Vernon Winfrey, a surprise Fourth of July celebration with close family and friends to honor her. In a video posted to her Instagram — and filmed by her best friend Gayle King — Oprah tells her followers she wanted the chance to celebrate her ailing father, while still enjoying it.
“So, I’m planning a backyard barbecue that’s really more than a backyard barbecue, it’s for Vernon Winfrey Appreciation Day,” the iconic host told the camera as King recorded him in front of a banner. There was a stand that read, “Vernon Winfrey Appreciation Day.”
“Because my father is sick and so we wanted all his friends to come and celebrate him while he is able to enjoy, so that’s what we enjoy.”
Oprah continued, “He doesn’t even know it’s for him. He thinks it’s the Fourth of July, he doesn’t even know it’s for him.”
Oprah and King named the meal by revolving around the party, which included fried chicken, burgers, and brisket, sitting in a chair surrounded by guests.
“My dad is a hairdresser so we put him in the barber chair,” Oprah told the camera. “We put him in the barber’s chair,” she said in her famous staccato before the video ended.
Ahead of the video, Oprah shared the importance of celebrating those closest to her while they are still around to acknowledge love. “Giving my father his “flowers” while he is still old enough to smell them,” she wrote. “Happy 4th of July when you get together with your family and friends. Remember to celebrate each other .”
Oprah has lived in Nashville, Tennessee, which is her father’s home, and has been documenting her journey. Over the weekend, the O Magazine founder shared a video of himself and King making breakfast in the kitchen. “Making breakfast for the family with @gayleking ️ #Nashvillestyle,” she captioned the video of her stirring grits and King on “bacon duty.”
Oprah also shared a video of herself and her family getting down to business and preparing for “Peppy Peas” for a backyard barbecue.
The former daytime talk show host did not elaborate on his father’s health.
