The effect of inflation on pumps and grocery stores is more than the prices, the path is changing no demo reno Star Jen Todrick does things on her show. ET’s Lauren Zima spoke to Todrick ahead of the season 2 premiere of the hit HGTV series about how inflation has driven up the cost of home renovations.
Todrick told ET, “I think the thing that will be hardest for even viewers to accept is they love that $50,000 to $40,000 renovation, ‘Oh my gosh this budget is so believable,'” Todrick told ET.
While the low cost is what made Todrick’s Reno so relatable and noteworthy to her audience, she said that due to inflation, it costs far more to make a surprising home change. no demo reno trying to achieve.
“It’s not $200,000, and I totally get and respect that. It’s more relatable, $40,000. However, that doesn’t get you anything, at least not for the premise of my show, “He continues. “We need at least three rooms, which can hold an episode. Three rooms and then we have a B story. That’s what we have to fill the time, to do that, I have to have three rooms. You can ‘Don’t do anything under 85, 80 right now.
$80,000 was actually the lowest Todrick says he and his team were able to renew for this season.
“You can do more, but if we’re making a design TV show, it needs to look amazing. We want it to look amazing. Customers want it to look amazing, and yes, we want no less than that.” Can, in fact, 80 was our lowest budget this season,” she says.
To stick within the show’s no demolition concept, Todrick has to think outside the box—creating an amazing design on a budget without taking down any walls or knocking down the house completely.
“I don’t want to say a box, but I love the box. It’s not a demo box, and we’re not taking down the walls and no one was doing that,” Todrick said of the unique concept behind the home design show I say. “It’s a hard rule like, ‘How do I design around that?'”
With those constraints, Renault experts say that makes it even more difficult to live within a budget above that.
“I already have that box all around me. I can’t have a price attached to it,” she says. “It would be a lot. It wouldn’t be able to produce the designs I have.”
The COVID-19 pandemic is pushing up prices too, with Todrick telling ET that she is looking at it from “both angles”.
“Especially in Texas, it’s crazy here because it comes from both angles — it comes from the market’s so crazy, they can’t afford to move, so they’re gonna stay in their house, and now They’re gonna invest, make money and make it what they want, and you’ve got people who have money to buy – they just bought a house they don’t really love, they just don’t care about the school district or whatever. want anything and now they want to stomach and renovate the whole thing. You’re getting it on both sides,” Todrick explains.
“So, labor is crazy,” he continues. “And the workers’ dues go up because the highest bidder gets the job. We’ll do the same thing.”
In turn, Todrick says, this is driving up the cost of everything in the home reno, purchase and design market.
“And so, what he’s doing is raising the price of everything,” shares Todrick. “Labor is a lot more expensive now than most of the time material. It’s crazy.”
Increased cost of doing business aside, Season 2 promises more laughs, tears and life-changing home reno moments.
“It’s a high. I mean, I love it. [That’s] Why do I do this,” Todrick says of making the show. “The subscriber count is probably — it’s really awesome, and you’re right, they think it’s life changing for them and I feel part of it. Have to become I am forever in the story of his life.”
