Nicki Minaj joined James Corden for a “Carpool Karaoke” segment earlier in two years, and the famous rapper proved to be one of the funniest, most exciting guests to date.
The longer segment saw the pairing of some of Minaj’s biggest hits, as well as getting into a personal and deeper way.
In one particularly candid moment, the 39-year-old “Anaconda” artist reflected on her own struggles with anxiety, and built a wall of confidence while at the center of the media spotlight.
“I think it was my natural state to be more confident when I was younger. But I think when you’re a woman and you’re in the public eye all the time, you’re less confident if you’re not careful. Because you are constantly being screened,” Minaj shared. “I don’t think it’s natural. It’s not natural for a human to feel that everyone is criticizing them.”
Minaj explained that when she first became an artist in the music industry, “I had this amazing sense of freedom because nobody told me what I was doing. Like, I could do anything.”
“And then it goes from that to the complete, complete opposite. If I blink my eye the wrong way, they’ll have a story about why I blinked my eye that way,” she said. “Whenever I’m off social media and remove that s**t from my phone, I have such a great sense of peace. And then you realize what really matters.”
For Minaj, what really matters is her 1-year-old son, whom she shares with husband Kenneth Petty.
,[Motherhood] plays a huge role [in feeling peace], Minaj said. “It doesn’t matter what’s going on… When I see my son, I just magically fall in love. He just makes me laugh, makes me smile, makes me happy. He’s very Cute and cuddly.”
“I rap and sing for him all the time,” she added with a smile. “I just make tunes all day.”
During the drive, Minaj also busted her Adele imprint, and weighed in on the English songstress’ cover of her “Monster” rap, which Adele performed in a 2016 installment of “Carpool Karaoke”.
Bearing a fake English accent, the rapper said, “She made me so happy. She embodied Nicki Minaj,” before performing her poem from “Monster” in split-screen with Adele’s performance years earlier. “
In fact, it was the “Carpool Karaoke” segment fans were waiting for and it delivered.
Corden spoke to reporters at a press panel Wednesday morning promoting the new installment of “Carpool Karaoke” and said that as soon as the show got a “go-ahead” by the network, taking safety precautions into account, he’d be right. Gaya Minaj will be her first guest.
“I couldn’t have wished for a better cast to bring back this segment,” Corden said, adding that he was “blown away by Nicky all afternoon.”
,[The segment] was far from my wildest dreams,” Corden said, indicating how Minaj was “so open” during the segment, and that she was “probably the most vulnerable” she has been in “a filmed environment”.
“It was very difficult to reduce,” Corden acknowledged, “that there is probably a 45-minute cut that is really interesting.”
late late show Airs on CBS weekdays at 12:30 p.m. ET/PT.
