Styles, then 16, sang the group’s 2009 earworm “Hey, Soul Sister” to the judges, but Simon Cowell wanted to hear his voice without disturbing the track.

“I don’t know if it’s the track that’s throwing you off, but can I hear you without some music?” Cowell asked. Styles then entered the Wonder Classic, which eventually took him to the next round.

Unseen footage from before X Factor It also included some jokes about Styles’ pre-weekend bakery job—where, he said, Viennese fancy and millionaire’s shortbreads were the top choice—and how his “mom’s always” told him he was a good singer.

“I wish I could do it, but I think with your help I can be a lot better than I am,” Styles said.
