Two years ago, Tom Cruise asked Ryan Tedder a simple question on Zoom: “What do you hear?” After being linked through a mutual partner at Paramount, the actor ended up showing the veteran producer and OneRepublic frontman a rough part of the dogfight football scene. Top Gun: Maverick, and Tedder could envision quite a sound mix. “I said, ‘I hear a little beach boys… gorillas… and whistles like that,'” Tedder recalls.
Taking cues from those references, as well as other acts such as Foster the People, Tedder and their bandmate Brent Kutzel, whistling in their heads turned into OneRepublic’s latest single, “I Ain’t Worried.” Shuffling Groove — which appears halfway through the blockbuster sequel, which took 36 years in the making and premiered in May — has since produced some of the band’s biggest hits in nearly a decade.
With the track’s popularity rising on TikTok after its May release, “I’m Not Worried” climbed to number 27 on the Billboard Hot 100 (July 30 chart), partly due to Miles Teller creating his own edits and Thanks for sharing fans. Shirtless – and now-viral – “Rooster Wiggle” from the scene during which the song plays. According to Luminate, the “rooster wiggle” tag has garnered over 1.5 billion views on TikTok, but “I’m not worried” has garnered over 65.5 million on-demand official US streams.
Like Kenny Loggins’ “Playing With the Boys” during the classic beach-volleyball scene in the original 1986 film, “I Ain’t Worry” takes viewers through the life-or-death stakes and high-flying action at the center of the plot. “The beauty of it was that I wasn’t trying to write some huge global record—it wasn’t following any pop math,” Tedder says. “It was not written to sound clear.” However, for Cruise, the song’s potential was always clear. A piece of his reaction when Tedder turned it up: “I think it’s a bull’s eye.”
