Early Thursday (August 4) at Lizzo’s hot ones – From the hit series First We Feast in which celebrities answer questions while eating painfully spicy chicken wings – the 34-year-old pop star said the food challenge will be “a piece of mom-of-kin’ cake”. She was wrong.
On her eighth hot-sauce taste test, Lizzo’s teeth were cracking and her body trembled from the excess of spice as her eyes were teary-eyed. “Jesus, Jesus, Jesus!” He repeated before giving away as much of his vegetarian chicken wing as possible.
Before she got to that point, though, The three-time Grammy-winning host was able to answer Sean Evans’ trademark in-depth questions more or less comfortably, including one about which songs she chooses from her album to create a single.
“I’m so bad at choosing singles for myself because I think everything I do is incredible, I really do,” she revealed with a laugh, revealing that her hit “About Damn Time”—the lead single and last Tracks She Wrote for Her July Fourth Studio Album Released Specific – Wasn’t promoted as nearly as one.
Lizzo shared that she wasn’t a huge fan of the song before it ended, but once it did she realized its message was something the world needed to hear at that moment. “‘I’m so down and under pressure, I’m too good to be this stressed out’ – it’s like, hello!” She set about the track, which would go on to become her second Billboard Hot 100 number 1.
The Yitty founder, who is classically trained on the flute, also told Evans why he thinks his music-theory skills are such an important part of his songwriting process. “I make pop music, but I think I make really musical, interesting pop music that I think a lot about composing,” she said. “Understanding the time signature — harmony and dissonance and rhythm and rhythm — I think is important.”
But back to the seasoning task, after the last couple of hot sauces gave Lizzo a run for her money, she was able to try and complete the challenge with a little help of some vegan ice cream to counter the spice. “We did it,” she said triumphantly at the end. “Album Out, Yetty Out, Watch out for Big Girls Emmy-nominated six times. And yet, it was high on my list of goals.”
