Blue Note Jazz Festival debuts with Robert Glasper, Snoop Dogg and more – Billboard

The Blue Note Jazz Festival in Napa Valley, Calif. began Friday (July 29) with host Dave Chappelle and Grammy-winning instrumentalist Robert Glasser as artist in residence.

“This festival comes from the thread of my residency at Blue Note that I do every October,” Glasper says of his stay at the famed NYC jazz club. “You can expect the music to be genuine and honest, made by people who push the envelope.”

The intimate three-day experience will include iconic acts such as Snoop Dogg, Yasin Bay and Talib Kweli, Maxwell, Corinne Bailey Rae, Erica Badu, Chaka Khan and new names on the scene like De Smoak and Alex Isley. “I’m most excited about Snoop. It’s going to be super dope,” says Glasper. “I hope I can breathe through all the weed smoke that will definitely be in the air.”

Held at Charles Krug Winery, the festival will feature three stages with 12 bands per day, the first outdoor, multi-day and multi-stage event for Blue Note Entertainment Group. “The festival potential is exactly where I want it – not too big, not too small,” says Steven Bensusson, president of Blue Note Entertainment. “It’s like emulating our little jazz clubs in terms of the intimacy that we hope to achieve in all our stages.”

The festival begins with a musical collective dinner party (Terrace Martin, Robert Glasper and Kamasi Washington) and Snoop, as well as a live recording of it. midnight miracle Podcasts, in partnership with subscription podcast network Luminary. After the festival sold out in six hours, an additional day was added and a limited amount of three-day general admission tickets were made available, costing $610. “We’re expecting that there’s going to be a lot more than what you see as you read the lineup,” Bensson says. “We anticipate a lot of urgency” [performers] Just getting up on stage with other bands like we do in our clubs.”

Blue Note Entertainment Group currently has 10 jazz clubs around the world, spanning from New York City to Milan, with plans to expand further into Europe, explains Bensusson. Blue Note also plans to create an East Coast version of the Napa Valley-based festival in future years.

Glasser, who released his single “All Masks” with Jamaican-born artist Massego on Friday, says the festival is his “playground” and a “dream come true”, adding that the festival is “out-of-the-box things”.
