Val Kilmer shares photo from cameo

assuming Top Gun: Maverick became the highest grossing film of the year so far, we’re going to guess you’ve seen it, but we’ll be releasing a spoiler alert, The new film comes three decades after the original and although Tom Cruise is at the fore and center, he is not the only one to reprise his role from the Tony Scott film. Acclaimed actor Val Kilmer also appears once again as Tom ‘Iceman’ Kazanski in the new film. Now an admiral in the United States Navy and leader of the Pacific Fleet, Kilmer shared a photo of his appearance in the film on social media, writing: “36 years later… I’m still your wingman <3." Check it out for yourself below.

Kilmer only appears in Top Gun: Maverick for one scene, although his presence is felt throughout the film (it is revealed at a certain point that his character is the reason why Tom Cruise’s Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell is recruited to return to Top Gun but also the one who keeps him out of trouble). The film also makes it clear that the friendship between Maverick and Iceman has persisted over the years, but the film also incorporates Kilmer’s own health issues into the film’s plot. Kilmer was first diagnosed and successfully treated for a case of throat cancer a few years back. As a result procedures were performed on his trachea, although the actor no longer has much of a voice, another aspect of his personal life built into the character for the sequel.

Iceman speaks via a computer for most of the scene, but eventually convinces Pete to return to Top Gun and prepare recruits for the very dangerous mission at the center of the film’s plot. Sadly, it is not long after the sequence that Iceman passed away outside the screen. Maverick attends the funeral along with other Top Gun recruits. The moment was huge not only for audiences around the world but for producer/star Tom Cruise.

“I worked really hard for him to make the film,” Cruz previously said. told people About to include Kilmer in the sequel. “The kind of talent he has, and you look at that scene, it’s very, very special.”

,[Cruise] Said, ‘We have to be Val, we have to get him back. We have to have him in the movie,” producer Jerry Bruckheimer said. “And that was the driving force. We all wanted him, but Tom was really adamant that if he was going to make another Top Gun, Val had to be in it. [Kilmer is] Such a good actor, and he is such a good person. We had such a great time the first time around and wanted to get some of the gang back together.”

Top Gun: Maverick Now playing in cinemas around the world.
