When Thor: Love and Thunder Hitting theaters later this week, it will be the second film in the franchise to be helmed by Taika Waititi. Although the first two features a more classic Shakespearean take on Asgardian, Waititi’s version of God of Thunder has been a complete reinvention. In fact, the filmmaker recently said in an interview that we want to turn the character into a version that fans won’t even recognize for a long time.

“I wanted to show him in a light that most Thor fans really wouldn’t want if you told them,” Helmer said. The Associated Press, “If you tell them: ‘Yeah, I’m going to love Thor,’ that’s probably the last thing a Thor fan really wants to hear.”

Coincidentally enough, Chris Hemsworth said earlier this year that he was bored with the character before Waititi was aboard the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Thor: Ragnarok.

“I was not impressed by what I did Thor 2The actor said in an interview Vanity Fair last month. “You know, I was a little disappointed with what I did. I didn’t think I enhanced the character in any way and I don’t think I showed the audience anything unexpected and different. When Ragnarok came along, that’s what I did. Out of my frustration at that — and it’s not on another director, it’s my own performance — I really wanted to break the mold, and I told Taika this.”

“I think our conversations were, ‘I’m really bored with Thor,’ and ‘I’m really bored with Thor too!’ Then we decided not to be bored and whenever this feeling came, we went in a different direction.” “We just destroyed the character. We wanted him to be more unpredictable. We wanted him to be in different situations than before and to have humor. I had a great relationship with Taika and we had a great time.” Nice sense of humor and I thought we should cram in this space.”

Taika Waititi, who directed Thor: Ragnarokreturns to direct Thor: Love and Thunder, He also co-wrote the film’s screenplay with Jennifer Katyn Robinson. The film and stars Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Chris Pratt, Jamie Alexander, Pom Clementieff, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Sean Gunn and Vin Diesel.

Thor: Love and Thunder Opens in theaters on July 8.
