Doctor Strange 2 star Xochital Gomez talks “positive representation” of America Chavez

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness Now running in theatres, and has made a successful debut at the box office. The film marks the return of many MCU fans as well as the return of Xochital Gomez as the first comics character, America Chavez. Gomez is talking about her Marvel journey and the role she landed at just 14 years old. During a recent conversation with peopleGomez explained why her character is an important representation to both teens and Latinas.

“The really amazing thing about her is that in the MCU version of America, she was 14 and I was 14 when I shot it,” Gomez explained. “therefore [I was literally] playing my age and it’s really a big deal because [a lot] Adolescents do not feel represented because [there are] 20-year-olds playing 15-year-olds.” She continued, “Which I also loved [about playing America] Is he resilient and he is charismatic… even though literally, the whole world is against him, he is hopeful and you want to root for him. It’s a really positive representation for Latins and teenagers.”

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness The director, Sam Raimi, recently spoke Empire Magazine How Chavez is an important part of the film.

“Weird is still learning about the multiverse,” Raimi explained. “And here’s a character who can really travel through it. He’s such a know-it-all at all times, and it’s probably smart to learn from a kid.”

“I think when people watch a movie, as it is in life, it’s not a single thing that defines any one character,” Kevin Feige added at a press conference. “As Xochital put it, she is a 14-year-old girl who is realizing this very painful element of her life, which is not an LGBTQ issue, is the fact that she is tossed around the multiverse multiple too many times. To be true to her and showcase her, and that’s not what the movie is about, but it’s an important part of her character that she becomes in the comics. We wanted to touch on that.”

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness There are also Benedict Cumberbatch as Stephen Strange, Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, Benedict Wong as Wong, Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer, and Chiwetel Ejiofor as Karl Mordo.
