The word “intrusion” means “an attack or attack, especially a sudden or brief one.” With reference to the MCU (and as defined in) Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness), an intrusion occurs when one reality crashes into another, demolishing and destroying one or both of those realities. Although it was not a major plot-point Doctor Strange 2Infiltration was definitely named for the purpose of setting where the MCU story is headed.

The whole point of starting to infiltrate the MCU at this point is simple: it’s the type of threat that sets up the next big MCU “event”: Secret Wars.

There have been two Marvel Secret Wars; The second one from 2015 was caused by a massive intrusion, when every alternate reality in the Marvel Comics Universe collided. Dr. Doom managed to piece together the tangled puzzle of a world of remaining pieces of reality, while Reed Richards managed to transport a small group of Marvel heroes on a spaceship to the “Battleworld” reality of Doom. At the end of the story, a new composite Marvel Universe was created from all the other pieces together.

Secret Wars has been teased as the next big MCU event for some time (including the Russo Brothers), and with good reason. The collapse of the Marvel Multiverse and the reboot under a new “Sacred Timeline” is about the only comic book lore that will reveal how the X-Men and Fantastic Four universes appear in the MCU so late in the game. Like the comics, this will also be a way for Marvel Studios to choose which characters, actors, and franchises they want to import and/or reboot within the MCU.

So, make sure you keep that word – intrusion – in your back pocket as the MCU saga progresses.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness Now in cinemas.
