Joe and Anthony Russo undeniably left an impact on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with the directing duo directing four films within the superhero franchise. among these is captain america civil war, the blockbuster adaptation of the Marvel Comics story of the same name, pitting Earth’s mightiest heroes against each other to great fanfare. whereas civil war Unquestionably an important step forward for the MCU’s narrative, it was still the subject of criticism—with some arguing that the film’s color palette relied too heavily on grays and other muted colors. In a recent interview Vanity FairRussos addressed that critique civil warand argued that the “brutalist” nature of the film’s narrative morphed itself into that color palette.

“This film is brutalist in tone,” argued Joe Russo. “It’s meant to be devoid of color. The whole idea behind it was that all these characters were slipping into this morally gray area. They didn’t understand their identity. They, you know, they get along with each other. Were in conflict. And so we wanted to use a space where, you know, civilians wouldn’t be running away fighting each other. We didn’t feel like they could recover from that. So we built an airport tarmac chose.”

Joe Russo also sheds some light on the behind-the-scenes work that went into bringing the film to life, and in particular how tough the extreme airport tarmac battle was.

The funny thing is, we shot it on the lot behind the sound stage in Atlanta,” Joe Russo revealed. “And I remember we took the temperature of Black Top and it was 128 degrees on Black Top. So the ground you see here is the black top. Everything else back here is all CG, isn’t it? None of these exist. when they ran over each other [right] and, there is no CG character on it [right] Party [on Team Cap], So these are the only two real characters on this side [on Team Stark], Spider-Man is CG. Ironman is CG, Vision, War Machine. This Scarlett was literally running herself with a stunt player in the hundred and, you know, 28 degree blacktop, over and over again. I remember she was looking at us once and we can’t do that one more time. There are few actors who can avoid doing such sequences over and over again. Sebastian couldn’t, Rainer couldn’t, Scarlett couldn’t. Mackie took off, Lizzie took off, and Rudd is definitely completely covered up.”
