Apple delays new Will Smith movie due to Chris Rock slap controversy

Apple has reportedly delayed the release of FreedomAn upcoming film starring Will Smith, after the recent controversy surrounding him slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars. Although the film did not have an official release date, it was originally expected to release sometime this fall, but it is now believed to be an “untold truth” that the film will debut sometime in 2023. According to a new report from varietyThere appears to be ongoing discussion about potentially releasing it in the fall, but it is “highly unlikely.”

Freedom, directed by Antoine Fuqua, follows Peter (played by Smith), a slave who flees Louisiana after nearly being put to death. Peter overpowers the cold-blooded hunters led by Fassel as he heads north, where he joins the Union army. The film is based on the true story of a runaway slave named Gordon. Photographs of his bare back, badly cut by an overseer’s whip, were published around the world in 1863, giving the abolitionist movement a testimony to the brutality of American slavery.

The film was headed for Smith’s first theatrical release after controversy led some sources to believe that following the Best Actor win this year for King Richard, it could potentially give the actor back-to-back roles. Back could lead to an Oscar win. The report cited the controversy surrounding Thappad, as well as past production delays and an already full declining slate of films for Apple, as possible reasons behind the move.

In protest of Georgia’s voting ban laws, production of the film was delayed when the film moved its production to Louisiana.

“At this time, the nation is coming to terms with its history and striving to eliminate the remnants of institutional racism in order to achieve genuine racial justice,” the filmmakers said in a joint statement at the time. “We cannot in good conscience subsidize a government that enforces regressive voting laws that are designed to restrict voter access. Georgia’s new voting laws are a reminder of the voting barriers that many Americans face. were passed at the end of Reconstruction to prevent voting. Sadly, we feel compelled to move our filmmaking work from Georgia to another state.”
