Academy makes big rule changes for next year’s ceremony

Ahead of next year’s Academy Awards ceremony, the Academy’s Board of Governors has announced changes to the “campaign rules” as well as changes to the program’s rules. The biggest of these is that the Academy is now returning to a theatrical qualification race to consider any films, after the governing body had previously ruled that films were able to qualify by streaming at Academy screening rooms amid the pandemic. But he will no longer be a moving artist. Qualifying runs for the films will not be limited to play in Los Angeles and will be open to play in New York, the Bay Area, Chicago, Miami and Atlanta for those hoping to earn nominations.

They also changed the names of both documentary categories, with “Documentary Feature” being changed to “Documentary Feature Film” and “Documentary Short Subject” being changed to “Documentary Short Film”. Finally, for the Sound category, “producers will be required to make their films available for viewing by members of the Sound Branch, particularly when the release date is after the opening of the initial voting cycle.”

Regarding the rules they create for the “campaign”, the practice by which studios use to try and entice potential voters with screeners/swag/etc., the Academy has set specific rules that are sent via mail. and can be sent to voting members digitally. Specifically, they write: “In an effort to strengthen this effort and streamline the mailing of award materials to Academy members, all approved items for eligible films must be sent using Academy-approved mailing houses. Any Even the film company which wants to send the material to the Academy. Members should follow this protocol.”

To draw heavily on this, he states: “The Academy requires that voting members of the Academy make their choices based solely on the artistic and technical merits of eligible films and achievements.” The Board of Governors noted that any “campaign activity” determined to be in violation of this agreement is subject to penalties including disqualification, while members who “authorised, executed or otherwise enabled” the restricted campaign activity may suspend or expel themselves from the Academy. can.
