Earlier this year, Mickey guyton made history at the 63rd Grammy Awards as the first black solo artist to be nominated in a country music category. A month later, at the 2021 Academy of Country Music Awards, she became the first black artist to host a major country music awards ceremony. Most recently, Mickey performed his song “All American” at the 2021 American Music Awards, which also featured performances by Jennifer lopez, Carrie Underwood, Sonic Silk, and more.

Mickey’s performance at the AMAs continues his incredible year. 1. Mickey is just a nickname.

The singer was born Candace Mycale Guyton in Arlington, Texas, June 17, 1983. Her name is Mickey for her entire professional career, which is probably an interpretation of her middle name.

2. Mickey auditioned for American Idol but was not selected.

After moving to Los Angeles after high school, she finally auditioned for season eight of the then-hit Fox singing competition in 2009. She was cut before the series aired live with the final 24 contestants. .

3. Mickey is the first black country artist to sign with a major record label.

She and her lawyer husband, Grant Savoie, welcomed a son named Grayson February 8. In an Instagram post that day, she showed the newborn baby swaddled in her hospital crib with an adorable knit beanie with pink and blue stripes on her head. Mickey wrote in the caption: “The hardest, most beautiful thing I have ever done. Welcome to the world, Grayson!
